Job summary

Downer Group in Southland, New Zealand is seeking a Driver Operator to join our road maintenance and surfacing teams. This hands-on role blends driving, plant operation and labouring, delivering essential work across the region.

You'll operate trucks and heavy equipment, support civil construction projects and perform general labour tasks with a crew-focused mindset. Outdoor work, safe practices and strong teamwork are essential to success in this role.

Qualifications

• Class 4 licence required.
• Experience driving trucks; trailer experience preferred.
• Experience operating heavy equipment.
• Civil construction or surfacing experience advantageous.
• Willing to work with crew outdoors.
• Team-oriented with strong communication.

Downer is proud to be commencing long ‑ term Road Maintenance and Surfacing contracts across the Southland region. We’re excited to recruit skilled people from local communities to help maintain and enhance the region’s roading network, keeping Southland moving.

The Opportunity

We're looking for a motivated Driver Operator to join our Southland team and be part of delivering essential road maintenance, civil construction and surfacing work across Southland.

This is a varied, hands-on role that combines driving, machine operation and general labouring duties. One day you could be behind the wheel transporting materials and equipment, the next operating plant, supporting sealing crews, or working alongside the team on-site.

Day to day responsibilities:

• Operating trucks and a variety of plant and equipment
• Supporting road maintenance, civil construction and surfacing projects
• Carrying out general labouring and skill construction tasks

Important Skills

• Class 4 licence is essential (Class 5 licence preferred)
• Experience driving trucks (trailer experience preferred)
• Experience operating heavy vehicles, plant or construction equipment
• Civil construction, surfacing or road maintenance experience would be highly regards
• A willingness to jump out of the cab and work alongside the crew
• Good communication and a team first attitude
