Qualifications

  • Minimum 3+ years experience in steel erection (or similar).
  • Able to read and interpret structural steel drawings for on-site erection.
  • Must communicate well in English and take direction from others.
  • Ability to undertake daily checks of machinery/equipment and report issues.
  • Knowledge of mobile crane operations, EWPs and site tools.
  • Rigging licence preferred but not essential.
  • Ability to read plans and set out jobs; understanding bolt tightening.
  • Heights ticket desirable; fabrication/welding knowledge advantageous.
  • Be physically fit and contribute to a safe, inclusive environment.

Responsibilities

  • Erect structural steel on various sites including long-term out-of-town projects.
  • Fix and secure structural elements according to drawings.
  • Read structural drawings and set out jobs on site.
  • Operate cranes and elevated work platforms; conduct daily equipment checks.
  • Communicate with team in English and follow directions.

John Jones Steel is one of the largest and most advanced structural steel fabricating enterprises in New Zealand, with over 60 years experience. We operate throughout New Zealand, with a proven ability to successfully undertake structural steel projects of any magnitude.

We are adding to our team and looking for Experienced Riggers and Composite Floor Decking staff to work on various sites erecting structural steel, please note some of these projects will require out of town work for long periods of time.

John Jones Steel encourages and supports a safe working environment, so it is essential that you are physically fit and can demonstrate a strong commitment towards health and safety and the environment.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
  • Minimum 3+ years experience in steel erection (or similar)
  • Be familiar with fixing and securing of structural steel elements according to drawings
  • Be able to read and interpret structural steel drawings for the purposes of steel erection on site
  • Be able to communicate well in English and take direction from others (in English)
  • Ability to undertake and record daily checks of machinery/equipment and report issues
  • A sound knowledge of mobile crane operations elevated work platforms and all relevant site tools and plant
  • A dogman / rigging licence is preferred, however, not essential
  • Ability to read and understand a plan and set out of jobs
  • Understanding of bolt tightening requirements
  • Current Heights ticket (desirable)
  • A knowledge of fabrication and welding (advantageous)
  • Be physically fit
  • A willingness to positively contribute to a diverse and inclusive environment

The Westport Deepsea Fishing School has a wide range of courses tailored to the Maritime Industry.

We are now seeking expressions of interest for our 2026 courses; The next available intakes will be September 21st October 26th 2026. These courses are subject to age and NCEA qualification criteria.

Westport Deep Sea Fishing School is seeking applications for our pre-employment programs.

Re-train with industry created programs that will kick start your career in sea going positions on NZ owned deep sea factory ships.

Successful students are facilitated into paid employment in the seafood industry; this however is dependent on usual employment practices, Company and vessel availability.

Starting wages ranging from 60 – 70k per year depending on trip lengths.

The Westport Deep Sea Fishing School is New Zealand's leading provider of pre-employment training for the maritime industry.
