Job summary

Barnett is seeking fit, strong carpenters/joiners for multiple roles in top of the South Island construction projects. This is a full-time permanent position based in Westport, NZ, with hours ranging from 30 to 45 per week.

Wages are NZ$28–NZ$30 per hour, with potential for weekend overtime and ongoing work through busy periods. The role involves raft foundation construction, use of hand and power tools, and ensuring safety at all times.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in Carpentry and Builder or Construction Labouring.
  • Competency in English is required; strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to meet industry work safety standards and wear appropriate PPE.

Responsibilities

  • Load/unload building materials and distribute them to appropriate locations on work sites or at the work shed.
  • Mark outs for excavation and assist in layouts for plumbers.
  • Drive in steel pins, place braces, and set formwork as required.
  • Operate hand and power tools and assist in removing formwork after concrete is placed.
  • Leave work sites clean and tidy; comply with safety and site procedures.

Westport Deep Sea Fishing School is seeking applications for our pre-employment programs.

Re-train with industry created programs that will kick start your career in sea going positions on NZ owned deep sea factory ships.

Successful students are facilitated into paid employment in the seafood industry; this however is dependent on usual employment practices, Company and vessel availability.

Starting wages ranging from 60 – 70k per year depending on trip lengths.

Job Description

Barnett is a fast growing construction firm in the top of the South Island. Due to stead grow, there are opportunities for Construction Labourers on current projects.

We are looking for fit, strong and experienced carpenters / joiners to fill 3 roles in construction in our firm.

Position: Full-time, Permanent

Minimum hours: 30 hours /week

Maximum hours:45 hours /week

Wages: $28 - $30

Role Description:

The position of consists of performing tasks involving physical labour constructing raft foundations. It consists of operating hand and power tools, assisting in the preparation and removal of formwork including set out, boxing, tying steel, placing pods and mesh, cleaning and preparing sites, digging footings, backfilling holes, loading, and unloading materials and equipment.

Tasks:

  • Load/unload building materials such as planks, polystyrene pods, mesh, braces, steel pins, and reinforcing, distributing them to appropriate locations on work sites or at the work shed
  • Mark outs for excavation
  • Spray, string line, measure, and mark profiles for plumbers
  • Drive in steel pins to the perimeter of the building line and screw in braces
  • Screwing braces and rebates to planks
  • Roll out polythene, placing pods, spacers, reinforcing steel and mesh
  • Operate rebar tie wire tools and cutters
  • Removal of formwork once the concrete has been placed by other contractors
  • Occasionally dig trenches and backfill holes using shovels, rakes, and picks
  • Leaving work sites clear and tidy to pass onto the next building stage

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Attention to detail – Being careful about details and thorough in completing work tasks
  • Safety – Operates a safe environment at all times wearing appropriate PPE
  • Dependability – Being reliable, responsible, and dependable
  • Cooperation – Being able to work pleasantly and respectfully with others on the job displaying a positive can-do attitude
  • Handles the physical demands of the job, including standing, walking, kneeling, bending, lifting, crouching

Minimum Experience and Skills Required:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in Carpentry and Builder or Construction Labouring
  • Must have experience in building, joinery, formwork and concreting
  • Competency in English is required. You must have good verbal and written communication skills and be a team player.
  • Applicants must be skilled with standard building and construction tools and safety equipment.

Additional Skills Required:

Ability to meet industry work safety standards at all times, including reporting and safety management documentation.

Ideal Candidates will have:

  • 5+ years of experience in construction industry
  • Experience in building, joinery, formwork and concreting
  • Knowledge of worksite safety procedures

Must be of good character, with clean record and at least two reliable character references. Pre-employment drug testing and on-site drug test may be required.

Additional hours may be required on weekend or evenings during busy periods. All additional hours paid at standard hourly rate.
