Job summary

Tauranga City Council is seeking a candidate with a foundation in building design or related fields to progress toward becoming a competent building consent processor. You will receive training and support to work toward processing competency, with learning from experienced team members.

The role offers flexible and hybrid working options, and a pathway to develop strong technical skills while helping ensure safe, compliant buildings across Tauranga.

Qualifications

• Regulation 18 qualification under the Building Regulations is required.
• Qualification in architectural design, building design, construction, or a similar area is required.
• Experience working with building consent applications, design drawings, consent plans, or supporting documentation is beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Support the Building Services team in processing building consent applications.
• Learn from experienced professionals and build technical confidence.

Te Tūranga | About the role

Are you ready to grow your career in building consent processing? This opportunity is for someone who already has a strong foundation in building design, architectural design, consent documentation, or a similar area, and is now looking to take the next step towards becoming a competent building consent processor. You don’t need to hold current processing competency for this role. What matters is that you bring the right qualification, relevant experience, and a genuine interest in building a long-term career in this space. Our Building Services team plays an important role in supporting Tauranga’s growth by helping make sure buildings across the city are safe, compliant, and fit for the people who live, work, and visit here. In this role, you’ll be supported to develop your knowledge, build your technical confidence, and work towards gaining processing competency. You’ll learn from experienced people, work with building consent applications and design information, and be part of a team that values practical thinking, good decision-making and continuous learning. This could be a great fit if you have experience working with consent plans or design drawings and are looking to pivot your career into building control.

Ngā Pukenga | What you’ll need to succeed

• a Regulation 18 qualification under the Building Regulations
• a qualification in architectural design, building design, construction, or a similar area
• experience working with building consent applications, design drawings, consent plans, or supporting documentation
• an interest in the Building Act, Building Code, and how good consenting decisions support safe building outcomes
• strong attention to detail and the ability to interpret technical information
• a practical, customer-focused approach and clear communication skills
• a genuine passion for developing a career in building consent processing

You don’t need to have current residential or commercial processing competency. We’ll provide training, guidance and support to help you work towards this.
