Job summary

Tauranga City Council is seeking a Compliance Officer - Building to support safe, well-built outcomes for the community. You will work with property owners, builders, contractors and the public to resolve building-related compliance matters and may respond to complaints, review information, and prepare clear records.

The role offers a hands-on training and handover period, with support from an experienced team to help you settle in and build confidence in the role.

After many years in the role, one of our long-standing team members is retiring, creating a great opportunity for someone with a building, trade, or compliance background to bring their practical knowledge into a role that supports safe, well-built outcomes for our community.

As our Compliance Officer - Building, you'll work with property owners, builders, contractors, and members of the public to help resolve building-related compliance matters. This is a varied role where no two days are quite the same — you might be responding to a building complaint, visiting a site, reviewing information, working through options with a homeowner or builder, preparing clear records and correspondence, or supporting an investigation where more formal action is needed.

This role would suit someone who understands how building work happens in practice and enjoys working with people to find practical, fair, and compliant outcomes. You don't need to know everything about council systems from day one — you'll have a good training and handover period, along with support from an experienced team to help you settle in and build confidence in the role.

We're looking for someone who brings:

• A building, trade, construction, compliance, or inspections background
• Practical knowledge of building work and how things happen on site
• Confidence talking with builders, contractors, homeowners, and members of the public
• A calm, fair, and customer-focused approach when working through issues
• Good written skills and attention to detail for notes, records, and correspondence
• Sound judgement and the ability to know when to educate, support, uplift, or take further action
