Job summary

Blackthorn Talent Acquisition is seeking a Junior Bookkeeper for a growing accounting practice in Queenstown, NZ. It is a full-time role offering development in bookkeeping skills within a supportive team, with exposure to diverse clients and financial responsibilities.

You will contribute to financial accuracy and compliance while learning across bookkeeping, payroll, and tax tasks in a local context.

Qualifications

  • Qualification in bookkeeping, accounting or related field, or relevant practical experience.
  • Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy when handling financial data.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.
  • Sound understanding of basic accounting principles in New Zealand context.
  • Professional communication with clients and team members.
  • Confidential handling of financial information.
  • Willingness to learn and grow in a small practice.
  • Familiarity with GST and tax compliance is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Record and process financial transactions (invoices, receipts, expenses) accurately.
  • Reconcile general ledgers regularly.
  • Prepare bank reconciliations and resolve discrepancies.
  • Manage accounts payable and receivable functions.
  • Assist with financial statements and management reports.
  • Process payroll information and employment records.
  • Support GST and annual tax compliance activities.
  • Use accounting software and maintain organised records.
  • Communicate with clients for documentation and clarification.
  • Assist senior staff with month-end and year-end close procedures.

Job description

What you'll be doing
  • Recording and processing financial transactions, including invoices, receipts and expenses, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards
  • Maintaining and reconciling general ledger accounts on a regular basis
  • Preparing bank reconciliations and identifying and resolving discrepancies
  • Managing accounts payable and accounts receivable functions
  • Assisting with the preparation of financial statements and management reports
  • Processing payroll information and ensuring timely submission of employment records
  • Supporting tax compliance activities, including GST returns and annual tax filings
  • Utilising accounting software and maintaining organised financial records
  • Communicating with clients to obtain necessary financial documentation and clarify transactions
  • Assisting senior team members with month-end and year-end close procedures
About the role

This is an opportunity for a Junior Bookkeeper to join a growing accounting practice in Queenstown. This is a full-time position offering an excellent opportunity for someone wanting to develop their bookkeeping skills in a supportive environment whilst also being able to grow the role into new areas. You will work with a variety of clients whilst contributing to the financial accuracy and compliance of the practice.

What we're looking for
  • A qualification in bookkeeping, accounting or a related field, or relevant practical experience demonstrating your competence in bookkeeping practices
  • Proficiency with accounting software packages and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel

  • Sound understanding of basic accounting principles and practices within the New Zealand context

  • Reliability, integrity and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality of financial information
  • Willingness to learn and develop your skills within a small practice environment
  • Familiarity with GST compliance and tax compliance requirements is desirable
