Job summary

Manukau Urban Māori Authority (MUMA) invites applications for an Assistant Accountant to support financial operations, reporting and day-to-day finance activities across the organisation.   • Essential: Accounting Diploma, Degree or other relevant financial qualification.
  • Desirable: Provisional Chartered Accountant status or currently studying towards a Chartered Accountant qualification.

Responsibilities

  • Support the delivery of accounting services and MUMA's financial and management functions.
  • Deliver and/or support the processing of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and General Ledger functions to agreed standards and timelines.
  • Prepare and support Payroll, PAYE and GST lodgements when required.
  • Act as backup for payroll and banking functions, while maintaining appropriate separation of duties between finance roles.
  • Manage and respond to operational and financial inboxes, enquiries and payroll queries in a timely manner across MUMA Group entities, redirecting enquiries where appropriate.
  • Manage supplier queries, staff reimbursements, court fines, IRD queries, debit and credit card administration and intercompany transactions.
  • Support the Financial/Management Accountant and Finance Manager with the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual audits, budget reporting and reconciliations.
  • Assist with continuous improvement of financial systems, processes and reporting to streamline workflows, reduce complexity and improve efficiency.
  • Report directly to the Finance Manager.

Education

Accounting Diploma, Degree or other relevant financial qualification

About the role

The Assistant Accountant plays an important role within MUMA's Finance team, supporting the delivery of accurate and timely financial information across the organisation.

You will coordinate and undertake financial processing and provide accounting and administrative support that contributes to operational planning, financial and management reporting, and effective decision‑making by the Finance team and senior management.

Working closely with the Financial/Management Accountant and Finance Manager, this role provides hands‑on support across accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, payroll, banking, reconciliations and other day‑to‑day finance activities.

About you

You will be an organised and collaborative finance professional who enjoys working across a variety of accounting and administrative responsibilities and supporting others to get things done.

You will bring:

  • Proven financial accounting and administrative experience.
  • Strong administrative process management and operational problem‑solving skills.
  • Proven experience working collaboratively with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to co‑lead and support finance‑related projects and new process initiatives.
  • A strong team focus, with the ability to work consistently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • A strong customer and service focus, with a genuine willingness to help and support others.
  • Demonstrated experience in an Assistant Accountant or administration support role across operational, financial and management functions within a medium or large organisation.
