Job description

Jora New Zealand will close on 9th September 2026. Thank you for being with us, we are cheering you on as you continue your career journey.

We're looking for an Independent Contractor to support apprentices in Ashburton who need extra help with the literacy and numeracy aspects of their apprenticeship.

This isn't a traditional teaching role. You'll work one-on-one (or occasionally with two learners) to help apprentices understand and complete the written requirements of their apprenticeship. The aim is to build their confidence so they can successfully progress through their qualification.

Literacy Aotearoa works with the Industry Training Organisation (ITOs) who provides the learners, learning resources and ongoing support. Administration is minimal, with just a short monthly learner progress update required. Work is flexible and based on demand from ITOs.

What you'll do
  • Support apprentices one-on-one (or 1:2) with literacy and numeracy related to their apprenticeship.

  • Help learners understand and complete workplace learning documents and assessments.

  • Encourage learner confidence, motivation and progress.

  • Maintain positive relationships with learners and employers where required.

  • Complete a brief monthly learner progress report (approximately 100 words).

About you

You enjoy helping people succeed and are patient, encouraging and practical in your approach.

Ideally you'll have experience in one or more of the following:

  • Adult education or training

  • Literacy and numeracy support

  • Apprenticeships or vocational education

  • Workplace coaching or mentoring

  • Trades or industry experience

You'll also:

  • Communicate well with a wide range of people.

  • Be organised and able to work independently.

  • Have basic digital skills.

  • Be able to pass a Police Vetting check.

A teaching qualification is an advantage but is not essential.

What we offer
  • Flexible independent contractor work.

  • All learning resources provided.

  • Minimal administration.

  • Ongoing support from Literacy Aotearoa.

  • The opportunity to make a real difference by helping apprentices complete their qualifications.
