Wilkes County is seeking a Part-Time Telecommunicator to receive and assess emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatch EMS, law enforcement and fire personnel, and log all calls. The position requires flexibility for days, nights, weekends and holidays.
Ideal candidates have a high school diploma or GED, strong English communication, proficient typing, basic Windows skills, and solid customer service and multitasking abilities under pressure.
Part-Time Telecommunicator
These positions receive and ascertain the nature of emergency and non-emergency calls while retrieving and entering data via computer; dispatch appropriate emergency medical services, rescue, law enforcement, and fire department personnel to emergency and non-emergency scenes; log calls and maintain records; answer non-emergency calls for information concerning a variety of county and other services; operate the Division/Criminal Information (DCI) computer and other systems. Applicants will work on an as needed basis according to the needs of the department which includes days, nights, weekends and holidays (hours per week vary for part-time positions).
Must be a minimum of 21 years of age to apply. High School diploma (or GED). Must have the ability to speak and write English with sufficient clarity to be understood by others on the telephone and in person. The candidate must possess basic Windows skills, must be able to type quickly and accurately on a computer keyboard, must have professional customer service skills, and strong multi-tasking abilities with the ability to remain focused under stress. The ideal candidate will have the ability to handle stressful situations; ability to act in a decisive manner, using good judgment; ability to handle a variety of rapidly flowing information at one time; ability to learn and apply new information; ability to remember numerous details/have good memory retention. Must have the ability to report events and information in writing, legibly and accurately, using proper English grammar. Ability to practice actively listening to others for an understanding of their needs and situations. Must have the ability to hear and understand sound sources coming through a communications headset. Must be able to hear and differentiate speech at various intensity levels. Must have the ability to read and discern visual images on a variety of media using normal eyesight or corrected lenses. Must be Division of Criminal Information (DCI) certified, NC Sheriffs’ Standards Basic Telecommunicator Certified and International Academy Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certified, Emergency Police Dispatch (EPD), & Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD or have the ability to become certified within 12 months of date of hire, and maintain certification throughout employment.
