Job summary

The Salvation Army is seeking a practical Maintenance Person to support our homelessness accommodation in London. This 20-hour weekly role focuses on safe, Welcoming environments and hands-on upkeep of buildings, rooms, grounds and equipment.

You will liaise with contractors and staff to ensure repairs are completed to a high standard while upholding our values of integrity and compassion. Applicants should be dependable, safety-conscious and capable of following instructions; health and safety

Qualifications

  • Relevant experience in maintenance, repairs or caretaking is valued.
  • Dependable, safety-conscious and able to manage a varied workload.
  • Ability to follow instructions, communicate clearly and use basic IT systems.
  • A health and safety qualification or training is helpful but not essential.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned maintenance tasks and repairs from inspection reports.
  • Maintain rooms, communal areas, buildings and grounds to a high standard.
  • Respond promptly to emergency repairs and ensure essential services are safe.
  • Perform safety checks and keep accurate records where required.
  • Keep tools and work areas clean, safe and well organised.
  • Coordinate with contractors and managers to complete repairs.
  • Work respectfully with residents and staff to foster a safe, inclusive environment.

Job description

Working hours: 20 hours per week Interview Date: To be confirmed. Could you help create safe, welcoming accommodation where people can rebuild their lives, feel they belong and thrive? If so, this could be the role for you. The Salvation Army Homelessness Services is looking for a practical, reliable and values-driven Maintenance Person to support the smooth running of our accommodation-based service. In this hands‑on role, you will help ensure our buildings, rooms, grounds, tools and equipment are safe, well maintained and welcoming for the people who live, work and visit here.

What you’ll be doing
  • Completing planned maintenance tasks and actions identified through inspection reports.
  • Carrying out day‑to‑day repairs, basic maintenance, decorating and upkeep of rooms, communal areas, buildings and grounds.
  • Responding promptly to emergency repairs and helping ensure essential services such as gas, electricity and water are maintained.
  • Carrying out health and safety checks, including checks of void rooms, and keeping accurate records where required.
  • Keeping tools, equipment and work areas clean, tidy, safe and well maintained.
  • Liaising with contractors, landlord representatives, colleagues and managers to ensure repairs are completed to a good standard.
  • Working respectfully with residents, colleagues and visitors, supporting a safe, inclusive and compassionate environment.
What you’ll bring
  • You do not need to have followed one set career path to be successful in this role. You may have worked in maintenance, repairs, decorating, caretaking, facilities, building services or a similar practical role.
  • What matters most is that you are dependable, safety‑conscious, able to manage a varied workload and committed to doing work to a good standard.
  • You will bring practical experience, an understanding of health and safety in residential or similar settings, and the ability to follow instructions, communicate clearly and use basic IT systems such as email and reporting tools.
  • A relevant qualification, health and safety training, or experience of working with vulnerable people would be helpful, but is not essential.

This is a meaningful maintenance role where your practical skills will directly support people experiencing homelessness.
