Job summary

Empiric is seeking an experienced Release Manager for a major POS/retail transformation in the Netherlands. The role is freelance with hybrid work: 2-3 days onsite per week in The Hague, and operates across a large retail network with legacy-to-modern POS migrations.

You will own release strategy, coordinate deployments, lead store cutovers, and manage vendor collaboration while maintaining ITIL-aligned processes and strong data integrity across locations.

Qualifications

• 7+ years in IT delivery with 5+ years in Release or Deployment Management.
• Proven experience replacing legacy POS with modern retail platforms.
• POS deployments across 50+ retail locations.
• Retail technology transformation, store cutovers and rollout planning.
• Coordination with third-party vendors and multiple delivery teams.
• Knowledge of ServiceNow, Jira, Azure DevOps and ITIL processes.
• Understanding of PCI-DSS considerations in retail environments.
• Fluent Dutch and English.

Release Manager - POS / Retail Transformation | Freelance Contract

Location: The Hague, Netherlands

Hybrid: 2-3 days onsite per week

The Opportunity

We're looking for an experienced Release Manager to support a major retail technology transformation programme in the Netherlands.

You'll take ownership of the release and deployment strategy for a new Point of Sale (POS) platform, coordinating the migration from legacy systems across a large network of retail locations.

This is a hands-on delivery role requiring someone who has previously managed complex, multi-site POS rollouts, store cutovers and business-critical deployments.

• Own end-to-end release planning, deployment schedules and rollout governance.
• Coordinate POS migrations and technology deployments across multiple retail locations.
• Lead store cutovers, pilot deployments, Go/No-Go decisions and rollback planning.
• Work closely with technical teams, retail operations and external technology vendors.
• Manage deployment risks, incidents, dependencies and business continuity.
• Oversee store readiness, testing, data migration coordination and post-go-live hypercare.
• Ensure alignment with ITIL change management and release processes.

What We're Looking For

• 7+ years' experience in IT delivery, including 5+ years in Release or Deployment Management.
• Proven experience replacing legacy POS systems with modern retail platforms – essential.
• Experience managing POS deployments across 50+ retail store locations.
• Strong background in retail technology transformation, store cutovers and rollout planning.
• Experience coordinating third-party technology vendors and multiple delivery teams.
• Working knowledge of ServiceNow, Jira, Azure DevOps and ITIL processes.
• Understanding of retail infrastructure, POS peripherals, store networks and PCI-DSS considerations.
• Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 POS would be advantageous.
• Professional fluency in both Dutch and English.
