Job summary

PolicyStreet Group is seeking a Senior Manager, Commercial Underwriting & RI Solution to lead RI Direct opportunities across Malaysia and regional markets. You will originate, qualify and close deals, while building insurer and reinsurer relationships and sourcing capacity for RI Direct and Partnership opportunities.

Reporting to the Chief Underwriting Officer, you will guide underwriting teams, align with Technical Underwriting and Partnership, and drive pricing, risk assessment and placement

Qualifications

• At least five years of relevant general insurance or reinsurance underwriting experience.
• Ability to originate, qualify and close RI Direct opportunities.
• Strong English, negotiation and relationship management skills.
• Experience with insurers, reinsurers, brokers or other capacity providers.

Responsibilities

• Originate and qualify RI Direct opportunities across Malaysia and regional markets.
• Own the commercial progression of opportunities: submissions, proposals, negotiations and closure.
• Develop and manage relationships with insurers, reinsurers, brokers and capacity providers.
• Identify suitable insurance and reinsurance capacity and negotiate placement terms for RI Direct and Partnership opportunities.
• Collaborate with Technical Underwriting to develop proposals with risk assessment, coverage and pricing.
• Coordinate with Partnership on capacity engagement and placement support.
• Maintain a pipeline register with value, stage, capacity needs and owners.
• Report on pipeline progression, conversion and risks to the CUO with escalation when needed.
• Supervise and coach the Underwriter to set submissions and documentation standards.

Reports to: Chief Underwriting Officer

You will lead the development and execution of the RI Direct commercial pipeline, from origination and opportunity qualification through proposals, negotiations and closure. You will also manage insurer and reinsurer relationships and source capacity for RI Direct and Partnership opportunities, while developing the Underwriter reporting to you.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

• Originate and qualify RI Direct opportunities, building a diversified pipeline aligned with business objectives and approved underwriting appetite.


• Own the commercial progression of opportunities, including submissions, proposals, negotiations and closure, subject to required technical and internal approvals.


• Develop and manage relationships with insurers, reinsurers, brokers and other capacity providers across Malaysia and regional markets.


• Identify suitable insurance and reinsurance capacity, establish initial appetite and negotiate commercial placement terms for RI Direct and Partnership opportunities.


• Work closely with Technical Underwriting colleagues to develop proposals supported by appropriate risk assessment, coverage, structures and pricing.


• Coordinate with Partnership on capacity engagement and commercial placement support, with clear ownership of actions and stakeholder communications.


• Maintain an accurate pipeline register covering opportunity value, stage, capacity requirements, next actions and accountable owners.


• Report pipeline progression, conversion, expected contribution, business quality and concentration risks to the CUO, highlighting obstacles and decisions requiring escalation.


• Supervise and coach the Underwriter, establishing clear standards for submissions, documentation, placement tracking and follow-ups.


• Improve commercial workflows and execution discipline while operating within delegated authority and approval requirements.

Requirements

WHAT WE EXPECT OF YOU:

• At least five years of relevant general insurance or reinsurance underwriting, placement or business development experience, including responsibility for commercial negotiations.


• Demonstrated ability to assess opportunities, prepare credible submissions and proposals, and progress transactions through internal approval and placement.


• Practical understanding of insurance and reinsurance terms, capacity requirements, risk appetite and underwriting economics.


• Experience engaging insurers, reinsurers, brokers or other capacity providers.


• Strong written and verbal English, commercial numeracy and the ability to manage multiple live opportunities.


• Ability to supervise junior staff, delegate clearly and maintain accountability for delivery quality.


• Strong relationship management and negotiation skills, with the ability to build counterparty confidence and secure workable commercial terms.


• Commercial ownership and disciplined underwriting judgment, with consistent follow-through and timely escalation of obstacles or exceptions.


• A collaborative approach to working with Technical Underwriting, Partnership and Legal, respecting each function’s responsibilities and decision authority.

• Recognised insurance qualifications, such as ACII, AMII or equivalent.


• An established insurer and reinsurer network in Malaysia or regional markets.


• Experience in affinity, embedded insurance, digital distribution or cross-border insurance and reinsurance arrangements.


• Experience developing new business portfolios and reducing account concentration.


• Exposure to portfolio profitability monitoring, pipeline systems and placement process improvement.


• Chinese-language proficiency to support business development and counterparty engagement as the business expands into North Asia.
