Qualifications

• Previous retail or customer service experience.
• Interest in Nyonya heritage, Asian culture, and artisanal craftsmanship.
• Reliable and punctual with flexible hours including weekends and public holidays.
• Basic numeracy and ability to handle payments; willing to learn POS.
• Fluency in English and Malay; other languages are an advantage.

Responsibilities

• Greet customers, answer enquiries, and offer product recommendations.
• Process sales accurately using the POS system and handle payments securely.
• Keep the store clean, organized, and visually appealing with stock displays.
• Monitor stock levels, receive deliveries, and conduct stock takes.
• Provide product information and heritage context to customers.
• Open/close the shop, ensure security, and reconcile cash.
• Support marketing and in-store promotions and displays.
• Report issues or discrepancies to management promptly.

About the role

Nyonya Heritage Art is seeking a dedicated Retail Assistant and Shop Keeper to join our team in George Town, Penang. This is a full-time position that plays a vital role in delivering exceptional customer experiences and maintaining the smooth day-to-day operations of our retail space. As Retail Assistant and Shop Keeper, you will be the face of our heritage business, connecting customers with our unique collection of culturally significant products whilst ensuring our store operates efficiently and professionally. This position is essential to upholding our brand values and creating a welcoming environment that celebrates Nyonya heritage and artistry.

Key responsibilities

• Providing outstanding customer service by greeting customers, answering enquiries, and offering product recommendations based on their interests and needs
• Processing sales transactions accurately using the point-of-sale system and handling cash, card, and other payment methods securely
• Maintaining the retail space in a clean, organised and visually appealing condition, including stock displays and merchandise arrangement
• Managing inventory by monitoring stock levels, receiving deliveries, and conducting regular stock takes to ensure accurate records
• Assisting customers with product information, heritage context, and the cultural significance of items within our collection
• Opening and closing the shop according to schedule, including security procedures and cash reconciliation
• Maintaining a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that reflects Nyonya Heritage Art's commitment to cultural appreciation and community engagement
• Supporting marketing and promotional activities, including window displays and in-store presentations
• Reporting any issues, damages, or discrepancies to management promptly and professionally

What we're looking for

• Previous retail or customer service experience, preferably in a heritage, cultural, or speciality retail environment
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage customers from diverse backgrounds
• A genuine interest in Nyonya heritage, Asian culture, and artisanal craftsmanship
• Reliability and punctuality, with the ability to work flexible hours including weekends and public holidays as required
• Basic numeracy skills and proficiency with point-of-sale systems or a willingness to learn
• Excellent organisational abilities and attention to detail when managing stock and displays
• Physical capability to stand for extended periods and lift stock items as needed
• Fluency in English and Malay; knowledge of Hokkien, Mandarin, or other regional languages is advantageous
• A positive, patient attitude and passion for delivering memorable customer experiences
