Job summary

Inter Island Group in Penang, Malaysia, seeks a Mechanical Design Lead (R&D) to direct mechanical design from concept to production release. You will lead a small team of engineers and guide projects across product development.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• Minimum 8 years of mechanical product development experience in R&D or semiconductor/automation environments.
• Proven experience leading complex mechanical design projects.
• Experience mentoring a team of engineers.
• Strong proficiency in SolidWorks or equivalent 3D CAD software.
• Deep knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analysis, materials, and manufacturing processes.
• Hands-on experience with sheet metal fabrication and equipment/enclosures.
• Familiarity with automation systems or semiconductor equipment is highly preferred.
• Experience with PCB integration or mechanical packaging is an advantage.
• Experience with FEA/CFD or other simulations is an advantage.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead the mechanical design and development of new products from concept to production release.
• Lead and mentor a small team of Mechanical Engineers and provide technical direction.
• Design mechanical systems for automated test equipment including enclosures and chassis.
• Perform tolerance stack-up, structural calculations, and component sizing.
• Apply GD&T, DFM, DFA, DFR, and DFC to meet targets.
• Develop prototypes and coordinate verification, validation, and reliability testing.
• Collaborate with Electrical, Hardware, Software, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain teams.
• Prepare engineering documentation and manage changes.
• Drive continuous improvement with new technologies and AI-assisted workflows.
