Job Summary:
This role is responsible for technical sourcing of mechanical, electrical, electronic and standard components with strong involvement during the NPI and DFM stages. The role works closely with Engineering and suppliers to identify cost-effective materials, manufacturing processes and equivalent parts while ensuring quality, technical compliance, lead time and supply continuity.
What You Will Do:
NPI & DFM Support
Engage with Engineering during the early NPI stage, preferably before BOM/drawing release.
Participate in DFM and design reviews with Engineering and suppliers.
Review drawings, specifications, materials and proposed manufacturing processes from cost, manufacturability and sourcing perspectives.
Recommend alternative manufacturing processes, materials, tolerances or design approaches that may reduce cost and lead time while meeting functional requirements.
Identify and drive cost-reduction and VA/VE opportunities for new and existing products.
Analyze supplier quotations, material costs, manufacturing processes, cycle time, tooling and secondary processes to identify cost drivers.
Work with Engineering and suppliers to simplify designs or processes where technically feasible.
Conduct cost benchmarking and support negotiation based on technical/process understanding rather than quotation comparison alone.
Equivalent/Alternative Part Sourcing
Identify lower cost equivalent or alternative components during the NPI stage and for existing products.
Perform initial technical comparison of specifications, functionality, form/fit and sourcing conditions.
Work with Engineering and QA to coordinate evaluation, testing and qualification before implementation.
Develop alternative sources to reduce cost, long lead time and single-source dependency.
Support BOM cost-down initiatives through alternative component sourcing.
Mechanical/Fabrication Technical Sourcing
Interpret 2D engineering drawings, STEP/3D files, tolerances, GD&T, materials and finishing requirements.
Understand manufacturing processes such as CNC machining/turning, sheet metal/laser cutting, bending, welding, powder coating/painting, plating/anodizing & other secondary processes.
Recommend suitable manufacturing methods and capable suppliers.
Work with Engineering and suppliers to resolve DFM, drawing and manufacturing concerns.
Supplier & Technology Sourcing
Identify and qualify new suppliers, technologies and manufacturing capabilities to improve cost, quality and lead time.
Conduct RFI, RFQ, RFP and technical/commercial evaluations.
Assess supplier equipment, manufacturing capability, process control and capacity.
Participate in supplier prequalification, technical assessments, site visits and audits with QA and Engineering.
Develop second-source and localization opportunities.
Supplier Process Improvement
Review supplier manufacturing processes and identify opportunities to improve cost, quality, cycle time and material flow.
Work with suppliers on process improvement and cost-down proposals.
Drive correction actions where issues originate from manufacturability, process capability or supplier technical limitations.
Strategic Sourcing
Develop sourcing strategies for assigned mechanical, electrical and electronic commodities.
Evaluate suppliers based on technical capability, cost, quality, delivery, capacity and supply risk.
Negotiate price, MOQ, tooling, lead time and commercial terms.
Identify high cost, long lead and sole-source materials and develop mitigation plans.
What You Will Bring (Required Qualifications):
Degree in Engineering or equivalent with minimum 5 years of experience in purchasing, engineering or procurement engineering with capital equipment required.
Strong negotiation and analytical skills required.
Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams across different departments.
Knowledge of electrical and electronic components and ability to understand technical specifications will be an added advantage.
Ability to drive and lead projects.
