Job summary

Mi Equipment (M) Sdn Bhd, located in Malaysia, seeks a senior Mechanical Design Manager to lead and develop the mechanical design team. You will participate in concept development, detailed design, and cross-functional collaboration to deliver automated wafer and die processing machines.

The role requires extensive experience in mechanical design, leadership, and a strong background in machine design, with a focus on manufacturability, reliability, and cost reduction.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
• Minimum 10 years of relevant mechanical/machine design experience.
• Strong knowledge in engineering calculations: sizing, tolerance, motion, structural validation.
• DFMA understanding for manufacturability and cost reduction.
• Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills.
• Proven technical leadership to coach and develop engineers.
• Ability to work with cross-functional teams: Electrical, Software, Process, Manufacturing, Quality, Project.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the mechanical design team to meet project objectives.

• Coach and mentor engineers to raise team technical capability.
• Identify design risks and ensure validation and testing before release.

Job description

1. Lead Mechanical Design Team- Lead, manage and develop the mechanical design team to achieve project and department objectives.

2. Hands-on Machine Design- Personally participate in machine concept development, mechanism design, 3D modeling, engineering calculations, component selection and detailed design for critical projects.

3. Technical Problem Solving – Take the lead in resolving complex mechanical, machine performance and design-related issues.

4. Design Review & Approval – Review and approve mechanical concepts, layouts, drawings, BOMs and design change to ensure technical quality and reliability.

5. Machine Design Development – Lead the development of new machines and continuously improve existing machine designs to meet performance, cycle time, quality and reliability requirements.

6. Design Optimization & Cost Reduction – Drive design improvements to reduce machine cost, improve manufacturability, simplify assembly and enhance machine performance.

7. Project Technical Leadership – Work closely with Electrical, Software, Process, Manufacturing and Project teams to ensure successful machine development and project execution.

8. Design Standardization – Establish and maintain mechanical design standards, design guidelines, standard components and reusable machine modules.

9. Technical Capability Development – Coach and mentor mechanical engineers and build the team’s technical capability in machine design and problem-solving.

10. Design Risk & Validation – Identify mechanical design risks and ensure appropriate simulation, testing and validation are completed before machine release.

11. Technology & Innovation- Identify and implement new mechanical technologies, mechanisms and design approaches to improve machine capability.

12. Resource & Capacity Planning – Plan manpower, workload and engineering resources according to project requirements and business priorities.

13. Customer & Management Technical Support – Provide technical input for major customer requirements, technical discussions and management decisions.

14. Continuous Improvement – Drive continuous improvement in mechanical design processes, engineering efficiency, machine quality and development lead time.

Job Requirements

Candidate must possess at least a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electromechanical Engineering or equivalent discipline.

Minimum 10 years of relevant working experience in mechanical design or machine design, preferably in automation, semiconductor equipment or precision machinery environment.

Strong knowledge in engineering calculation and analysis, including mechanical sizing, tolerance analysis, motion calculation, structural consideration and design validation.

Good understanding of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA), with the ability to optimize designs for manufacturability, assembly efficiency, cost reduction and reliability.

Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills, with proven ability to resolve complex mechanical, machine performance and design-related issues.

Possess strong technical leadership skills with the ability to lead, coach and develop mechanical design engineers.

Able to work effectively with cross-functional engineering teams, including Electrical, Software, Process, Manufacturing, Quality and Project teams.

Possess strong project and engineering management capability, including resource planning, workload prioritization, design schedule control and technical decision-making.

Strong technical communication skills with the ability to present design concepts, explain technical issues, support customer discussions and provide clear engineering recommendations to management.
