A STAR Advanced Technologies Sdn. Bhd. is seeking a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to support NPI, product development, tooling and supplier development across Southeast Asia.
You will design mechanical components using 3D CAD, review drawings, and lead DFM and production launches from kickoff through first article and mass production. The role requires experience with plastics and metals, GD&T familiarity, and strong English; Chinese and Malay language skills are a plus.
We are looking for a highly capable and hands-on Mechanical Engineer to support New Product Introduction (NPI), product development, supplier development, tooling and manufacturing across our Southeast Asia operations.
The ideal candidate is a strong engineering thinker with experience in plastic (primary), metal, sheet metal, CNC machining, die casting, stamping, secondary processes, tooling and mechanical assemblies.
This is a hands-on role. The engineer will take ownership of new projects from kickoff through DFM, quotation, supplier development, prototype, tooling, FAI, qualification and production launch.
The successful candidate should be able to work independently, identify problems early, challenge suppliers when necessary, and drive projects to completion.
Own assigned new projects from kickoff through production launch.
Review customer drawings, specifications, BOMs and project requirements.
Coordinate with Sourcing, Quality, Program Management, suppliers and customers to achieve project milestones.
Lead technical discussions during new product development.
Identify engineering, tooling, material and manufacturing risks early.
Support the engineering portion of the NPI schedule.
Coordinate prototype builds, tooling trials, first article builds and production readiness.
Support FAI, qualification and customer approval activities.
Ensure engineering changes are properly controlled and implemented.
Drive open technical issues to closure before mass production.
Support the transition from prototype/NPI into stable mass production.
Review and interpret customer drawings, specifications and BOMs.
Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies using 3D CAD.
Work with a wide range of materials and manufacturing processes, including:

Evaluate material selection, tolerances, surface finishes and mechanical requirements.
Review GD&T and identify potential manufacturing risks.
Support engineering changes and product improvements.
Evaluate alternative materials and manufacturing methods to improve cost, quality and manufacturability.
The engineer should understand the complete manufacturing process, including processes performed after the primary plastic or metal manufacturing operation.
Support and evaluate secondary processes including:
Painting and coating
Plating and anodizing
Pad printing / silk screening
Adhesive application and bonding
Heat staking
Ultrasonic welding
Tapping and post-machining
Mechanical assembly
Review secondary-process requirements for quality, appearance, tolerance, cost and manufacturability.
Identify secondary-process risks during DFM and NPI.
Work with suppliers to develop, test and qualify secondary processes.
Troubleshoot secondary-process defects and drive root-cause corrective actions.
Evaluate alternative processes and suppliers to improve cost, quality and lead time.
Lead DFM reviews for new products.
Identify manufacturing risks before tooling is released.
Review plastic design features including wall thickness, ribs, bosses, draft, sink, warp, parting lines and undercuts.
Review metal part design including tolerances, bend radius, forming, stamping and machining requirements.
Evaluate secondary processes and assembly requirements.
Work with suppliers to optimize designs for quality, cost and manufacturability.
Challenge supplier recommendations when technically appropriate.
Recommend alternative designs, materials or manufacturing processes were beneficial.
Work directly with suppliers on mold, die and tooling development.
Review tooling concepts, tool designs and supplier proposals.
Follow tooling from design through fabrication, trial, modification and qualification.
Support mold, tooling and production trials.
Identify tooling risks and ensure corrective actions are completed.
Review supplier technical proposals and recommend improvements.
Support tooling transfers from China to Southeast Asia.
Develop strong technical relationships with Southeast Asia suppliers.
Support Sourcing with technical review of RFQs.
Review supplier quotations and validate technical assumptions.
Develop or validate should-cost estimates for mechanical components.
Evaluate material, tooling, primary process, secondary process, labor and assembly costs.
Identify cost-reduction and value-engineering opportunities.
Evaluate alternative materials, suppliers and manufacturing processes.
Support PPV and cost-reduction initiatives.
Coordinate engineering activities for prototype and first article builds.
Review dimensional inspection and FAI reports.
Work with Quality and suppliers to resolve non-conformances.
Support customer qualification and approval.
Ensure critical engineering issues are closed before production release.
Support production ramp-up and troubleshoot mechanical and manufacturing issues during NPI and mass production.
Work with Quality and suppliers on root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
Work directly with suppliers to resolve technical and manufacturing issues.
Conduct root-cause analysis and drive corrective actions.
Develop alternative manufacturing solutions when suppliers cannot meet requirements.
Support supplier capability assessment and development.
Visit suppliers and factories when required.
Challenge suppliers when technical, quality, cost or delivery improvements are possible.
Support continuous improvement across Southeast Asia suppliers.

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering or related discipline.
3-8 years of relevant engineering, NPI or manufacturing experience.
Experience with plastic (primary) and/or metal components.
Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and tooling.
Good understanding of engineering drawings and GD&T.
Experience with 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor or equivalent.
Experience working with suppliers or contract manufacturers.
Good English communication skills. Able to speak Chinese and Malay.
Willing to travel to suppliers and manufacturing sites when required.
