Customs officer/ Sr. Officer - Chinese Speaking (Penang,Malaysia)
Position Summary
The Customs Officer is responsible for ensuring full compliance with Malaysian customs regulations and international trade requirements. The role manages import and export documentation, tariff classifications, duty optimization, and coordination with customs authorities, freight forwarders, and internal stakeholders to ensure timely and compliant movement of goods.
Key Responsibilities
Customs Compliance
- Ensure all import and export activities comply with Malaysian Customs regulations and company policies.
- Monitor changes in customs laws, trade agreements, and regulatory requirements.
- Support internal and external customs audits.
Import & Export Operations
- Prepare and review customs declarations and shipping documentation.
- Coordinate customs clearance with brokers, freight forwarders, and logistics providers.
- Resolve shipment delays, customs holds, and clearance issues.
- Responsible for import and export operations at LMW factory, familiar with customs regulatory requirements for LMW factories, and handling actual operations at LMW factories to meet customs supervision
Tariff Classification & Valuation
- Classify products using the Harmonized System (HS) code.
- Verify customs valuation, country of origin, and applicable duties and taxes.
- Maintain accurate master data for customs purposes.
Documentation Management
- Ensure accuracy of commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, import permits, and shipping documents.
- Maintain customs records in accordance with legal retention requirements.
Duty & Cost Optimization
- Identify opportunities to reduce customs costs through Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), bonded warehouse schemes, or duty exemptions.
- Monitor duty payments and reconcile customs-related expenses.
Stakeholder Coordination
- Work closely with Procurement, Logistics, Warehouse, Finance, and Supply Chain teams.
- Liaise with customs authorities and government agencies when required.
- Coordinate with suppliers and customers on trade compliance matters.
- Identify customs compliance risks and implement corrective actions.
- Investigate discrepancies and support root cause analysis for customs-related issues.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, International Trade, Business Administration, or a related field.
- 3–5 years of experience in customs operations, import/export compliance, or international trade.
- Strong knowledge of Malaysian customs regulations and HS classification.
- Familiarity with ERP systems (e.g., SAP) and customs declaration platforms.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarize yourself with Malaysian customs requirements.
- Familiar with international trade and logistics operations
- Experienced in handling customs matters and communicating with customs officers.
- Strong communication skills in English; Malay; Mandarin is an advantage.
