Job summary

International Islamic University Malaysia is seeking an Assistant Engineer (Mechanical) to support planning, coordination and monitoring of mechanical projects within the Development Division. You will assist in design development, prepare drawings, and coordinate with architectural, civil, structural and M&E teams to ensure integrated, compliant and efficient mechanical services.

The role requires a Diploma in mechanical engineering with at least five years of experience, proficiency in AutoCAD

Qualifications

• Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Malaysian Government.
• At least five years of working experience in mechanical engineering.
• Sound knowledge in mechanical engineering design, building services systems (HVAC, plumbing, fire protection), and project coordination.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD and other relevant drafting software (e.g. Revit, SketchUp; BIM tools is an added advantage).

Responsibilities

• Assist in coordinating with end-users, consultants, and contractors to identify mechanical engineering requirements for building services systems.
• Prepare concept designs, mechanical layout drawings, and technical presentation materials for mechanical services.
• Develop detailed design drawings and documentation, including submissions for local authority approvals.
• Manage and coordinate mechanical engineering projects, including new installations, upgrading, replacement and refurbishment.
• Conduct site inspections to monitor progress, quality, cost and compliance with specifications and timelines.
• Coordinate with Civil & Structural and M&E engineers for proper design integration and buildability.
• Review contractor submissions such as shop drawings and material samples for compliance.
• Attend coordination meetings and resolve technical, design, and construction issues related to mechanical systems.
• Prepare reports, technical documentation and defect lists; verify as-built drawings.

2. Scope

The Assistant Engineer(Mechanical) is responsible for supporting the planning, coordination, managingand monitoring mechanical engineering projects under the Development Division.The scope includes assisting in the management of mechanical engineeringrelated projects from project initiation and development of project briefthrough design, procurement, implementation, testing, commissioning andcompletion in accordance with the approved standards, University requirements,local authority regulations, and relevant codes of practice.

The Assistant Engineer(Mechanical) is also required to assist in the preparation ofquotation/tender documentation, including preparation of the technicaldrawings, specifications, Bills of Quantities, and coordinating with othertechnical disciplines such as architectural, civil, structural, and electricalengineering to ensure full design integration, coordination, and buildabilityof mechanical services.

The scope further includesreviewing contractor submissions such as shop drawings, material samples,method statements, technical data, and mock-ups, to ensure compliance withdesign intent, specifications, and performance requirements. The Assistant Engineer(Mechanical) will also conduct inspections, monitoring mechanicalinstallation works for quality, functionality, and compliance, attending sitemeetings, coordination technical and design issues, preparing defects lists,and verifying as-built drawings. The role ensures that all mechanical systemsdelivered are efficient, safe, fully functional, and aligned with theUniversity's requirements.

3. Key Responsibilities

• (a) Assist incoordinating with end-users, consultants, and contractors to identify themechanical engineering requirements for building services systems.
• (b) Prepare conceptdesigns, mechanical layout drawings, and technical presentation materials formechanical services such as HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and relatedsystems.
• (c) Develop detaileddesign drawings and documentation, including assisting in the preparationsubmission drawings for local authority approval and compliance purposes.
• (d) Manage and coordinatemechanical engineering projects, including new installations, upgrading,replacement, refurbishment and rectification works.
• (e) Conduct siteinspections to monitor project progress, quality, cost and compliance withapproved specifications, drawing, timelines and contractual requirements.
• (f) Coordinatewith Civil & Structural and M&E engineers to ensure proper designintegration and buildability.
• (g) Supportupgrading/renovation works to ensure compliance with mechanical engineeringstandards and design intent.
• (h) Review contractorsubmissions such as shop drawings, material samples, mock-ups, and methodstatements for compliance with design intent and specifications.
• (i) Attendcoordination meetings and assist in resolving technical, design, andconstruction issues related to mechanical systems.
• (j) Assistin the preparation of reports, technical documentation and defects lists.
• (k) Verifyas-built drawings submitted by contractors.
• (l) Maintainproper documentation and records of all project activities and site progress.
• (m) Monitor defectsduring the Defects Liability Period and coordinate necessary rectificationsworks.
• (n) Support the implementationof initiatives related to energy efficiency, sustainability and improvement ofmechanical system and building services.
• (o) Perform other mechanical engineering duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Division.

4. Minimum Qualifications

• (a) Possess a Diploma in MechanicalEngineering or equivalent qualification from any institution recognised by theMalaysian Government.
• (b) Possess at least five (5) years’working experience in mechanical engineering field.
• (a) Resourceful, with sound knowledge in mechanicalengineering design, building services system (HVAC, plumbing, fire protection),and project coordination.
• (b) Proficient in Microsoft Office,AutoCAD, and other relevant engineering or drafting software (e.g. Revit, SketchUp,or BIM tools is an added advantage).

7. Language Qualifications

All candidates must have obtained:

• (a) Credits in Bahasa Malaysia andEnglish language (including oral examination) at Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM)level OR equivalent qualification recognised by the Government (for Malaysiancitizens).
• (b) IELTS Band 6 / MUET Band 4. Candidate without any of these qualifications will berequired to sit for the IIUM English Language Proficiency Test.
