Job summary

Oportun in Mexico is seeking a hands-on Senior Data Engineer to design, build, and maintain scalable data platforms and pipelines. You will solve complex problems with robust data architectures, mentor engineers, and drive data governance and observability across cross-functional teams.

You will lead end-to-end data initiatives, collaborate with cloud and analytics teams, and explore AI-assisted approaches to improve productivity and solutions.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in data engineering with focus on architecture, ETL and databases.
• Strong programming in Python or PySpark; Java or Scala experience.
• Experience building end-to-end data pipelines and data integration.
• Deep SQL knowledge with relational and NoSQL databases.
• Experience with Spark, Kafka, Hadoop or similar big data stacks.
• Orchestration tools like Airflow, Databricks, Jenkins or equivalent.
• Cloud familiarity: AWS, Azure, or GCP; Agile work experience.
• Mentoring junior engineers and showing technical leadership.
• Clear written and verbal communication across teams.

Responsibilities

• Design scalable data architectures supporting analytics and products.
• Build and maintain data pipelines, ETL and integrations for large data volumes.
• Optimize pipelines, databases, warehouses and lakes for performance and security.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business needs into data models.
• Establish data quality, governance, and observability standards.
• Implement monitoring and improve platform reliability.
• Provide architectural leadership and review code for quality.
• Mentor engineers and foster continuous learning and excellence.
• Lead multiple features and projects across teams and timelines.
• Explore AI tooling to boost engineering productivity and problem solving.
