Job summary

Jobgether, on behalf of a partner company, is seeking a Staff Applied AI Researcher (Agentic Search) based in Italy. You will lead applied AI research to build agent-native search systems, spanning retrieval, ranking, and real-time web data grounding. You will mentor teams and translate research into production impact.

This is a staff-level role with ownership of core components in a fast-paced AI platform, offering opportunities across Europe and a research-driven environment.

Qualifications

• At least 8 years of experience in applied AI, machine learning, or software engineering.
• Designed, developed, and deployed ML/AI systems at scale.
• Deep expertise in information retrieval, search, ranking, or RAG.
• Strong understanding of modern DL techniques, transformers, embeddings.
• Experience building LLM-integrated systems and knowledge-intensive apps.
• Proven evaluation frameworks, metrics, and experimentation methods.
• Strong Python programming skills and scalable solution building.
• Publications in major AI conferences (ICLR, ICML, NeurIPS, etc.).
• Ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced product-driven environment.
• Strong analytical and communicational skills; cross-team collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Drive research strategy and technical development across agent-native search systems.
• Define technical direction of retrieval and ranking systems.
• Design and evolve multi-stage retrieval architectures (query understanding to iterative retrieval).
• Develop agent-native search capabilities for low-latency and complex tasks.
• Lead experiments with embedding, sparse/hybrid retrieval, reranking, and context compression.
• Train and optimize ranking and retrieval models for agent-driven workflows.
• Ground LLMs in real-time web data with trust, quality and freshness signals.
• Collaborate on new metrics and assessment frameworks for agentic systems.
• Analyze trade-offs among relevance, latency, reliability and cost.
• Partner with engineering to deploy and scale capabilities across production workloads.
• Translate advances in AI/ML into measurable production impact.
• Mentor researchers and engineers; shape long-term research strategy.
• Own a key component of the search stack and drive its development first year.
