Saipem Offshore Construction is seeking an Automation Engineer to design, test, and commission automation systems for Pipeline Technologies. You will work on ST-based PLC programming and OO software (C++, C#, Python) to interface with data acquisition and SCADA systems.

The role involves both onshore and offshore activities, with possible international assignments. A Bachelor’s or Master’s in Automation Engineering is required, along with 1–2 years in automation and familiarity with Beckhoff,

Competenze

• Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Automation Engineering or related field.
• 1–2 years experience in automation systems development.
• Familiar with at least one industrial automation platform (Beckhoff, B&R, Siemens or Rockwell).

Saipem Offshore Construction (SOC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Saipem S.p.A. SOC brings together all operational activities in Italy related to fabrication, technical services, maintenance, and logistics, providing essential support for the execution of offshore construction and offshore wind projects.

Purpose of the position: As Automation Engineer you will be part of the Offshore construction business line. You will be involved in the development, testing and commissioning of automation systems and automation monitoring solutions for Industry 4.0, applied to the Oil & Gas industry and in particular to pipelay activities.As Automation Engineer you will be part of the Pipelines Technologies Innovation department of Saipem.

How can you support us?

• Design, development and programming of PLC software and architectures, with a strong focus on Structured Text (ST) control logic, for the development of industrial automation applications
• Develop and test high-level Object-Oriented software (e.g. C++, C#, Python) to interface machines with data acquisition and supervisory systems, implement computer vision algorithms, develop Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) and user applications.
• Develop technical specifications for automation solutions and design studies, and supervise supplier activities throughout the full procurement lifecycle, including technical clarification, bid evaluation, expediting and acceptance.
• Support machine and plant commissioning, with responsibility for software startup, debugging and validation
• Provide remote and on-site technical support for troubleshooting and resolution of software-related issues

What are we looking for?

An Automation Engineer, even with limited experience, to be introduced in the team leading the design, development, testing and commissioning of automation systems and automation monitoring solutions for Pipeline Technologies.

The role requires working on automation solutions for industrial production sites, with commissioning and technical support activities carried out both onshore and offshore, depending on the project needs. The selected candidate will be involved in software and automation activities across the full machine lifecycle, from system design and integration to site commissioning and operational support.

Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Automation Engineering or in a related engineering discipline (Mechatronics, Electronics, Computer Engineering)

Background: Preferably, 1-2 years' experience in automation systems development and be familiar with at least one industrial automation platform (Beckhoff, B&R, Siemens or Rockwell). University projects or internship within automation engineering, electronics or computer engineering.

Languages: English: very good command of written and spoken language, good knowledge of technical English; Italian language: full command.

Technical/IT Knowledge:

• Knowledge of PLC-based programming and object-oriented programming (OOP)
• Knowledge of the main industrial communication protocols (e.g. EtherCAT, CANopen, ProfiNet), networking and their configuration.
• Design, configuration and test of motion control functions (integrating drives, axes and motors)
• Basic knowledge of electronics, including sensors, actuators and common industrial electronic components. Ability to read, understand and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams and technical documentation.
• Capability to design and develop integration solutions for electronic components within automated systems
• Basic knowledge of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and Machine Learning approaches applied to industrial automation
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a hands‑on approach to system integration and troubleshooting. Very good attitude to teamworking.

What else should you know? The position requires availability to travel abroad and to undertake short-term international assignments
