Qualifications

Job description

Job Purpose:

To manage and coordinate the day-to-day operations of the Critical Care Unit, ensuring high-quality patient care, effective staff management, compliance with clinical and hospital protocols, and optimal utilization of resources.

Key Responsibilities:

• Oversee the daily functioning of the ICU/Critical Care Unit and ensure smooth operations.
• Ensure delivery of safe, high-quality and patient-centric critical care.
• Supervise and coordinate nursing and support staff in the Critical Care Unit.
• Prepare duty rosters, allocate manpower and ensure adequate staffing as per patient acuity.
• Monitor patient care, documentation, medication administration and compliance with clinical protocols.
• Coordinate with intensivists, consultants, nursing teams and other departments for effective patient management.
• Ensure adherence to infection prevention and control practices, hand hygiene and isolation protocols.
• Monitor availability and proper utilization of critical care equipment, medicines and consumables.
• Ensure ICU equipment such as ventilators, monitors, infusion pumps and emergency equipment are maintained and functional.
• Conduct regular rounds and monitor quality indicators, patient safety and clinical outcomes.
• Handle emergencies and coordinate timely escalation to the concerned clinical team.
• Ensure compliance with hospital policies, NABH standards and statutory requirements.
• Identify training needs and conduct/coordinate competency-based training for staff.
• Counsel, guide and motivate team members to maintain professional standards.
• Monitor attendance, performance, discipline and productivity of the team.
• Investigate and report incidents, near misses and patient safety concerns.
• Maintain accurate records, reports and departmental documentation.
• Coordinate with Biomedical, Pharmacy, CSSD, Laboratory, Housekeeping and other support departments.
• Participate in audits, quality improvement initiatives and accreditation activities.
• Handle patient and relative concerns professionally and elevate unresolved issues appropriately.
• Ensure effective handover and communication between shifts.
• Monitor infection rates, medication errors, pressure injuries, falls and other critical care quality indicators.
• Support implementation of new processes, protocols and hospital initiatives.

Qualification:

• B.Sc. Nursing / Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing / GNM from a recognized institution.
• M.Sc. Nursing / specialization in Critical Care Nursing will be an added advantage.
• Valid registration with the respective State Nursing Council.

Experience:

• Minimum 58 years of relevant experience in Critical Care/ICU.
• Prior experience in a supervisory or ICU leadership role is preferred.
