Job description

The Staff Nurse – ICU will play a critical in caring for patients with severe and life‑threatening conditions requiring close monitoring and specialized treatment. This involves administering medications, operating advanced medical equipment, assisting doctors during emergencies, and ensuring timely interventions. The candidate must possess strong clinical knowledge, quick decision‑making abilities, and the capability to work efficiently in high‑pressure situations while maintaining empathy and professionalism.

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to critically ill patients in the ICU.
  • Monitor patient vital signs, cardiac rhythms, oxygen saturation, and hemodynamic parameters continuously.
  • Operate and manage life‑support equipment including ventilators, infusion pumps, monitors, and defibrillators.
  • Administer medications, IV fluids, inotropes, and emergency drugs as prescribed.
  • Ensure adherence to medication safety protocols and the “10 Rights” of medication administration.
  • Assess patient conditions regularly and promptly report any deterioration to the intensivist or consultant.
  • Assist doctors during emergency procedures such as intubation, central line insertion, and resuscitation.
  • Perform airway management, suctioning, and ventilator care as per protocols.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of nursing assessments, treatments, medications, and patient progress.
  • Provide pre‑operative and post‑operative care for critically ill patients.
  • Maintain strict infection control practices and ICU aseptic protocols.
  • Ensure proper isolation precautions for infectious patients.
  • Participate in code blue and emergency response situations.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams for effective patient management.
  • Assist in patient mobilization and rehabilitation activities when appropriate.
  • Provide emotional support and counseling to patients and their families.
  • Ensure proper handover and takeover during shift changes with complete patient updates.
  • Maintain ICU inventory and ensure availability of emergency supplies and medications.
  • Ensure biomedical waste segregation and disposal as per guidelines.
  • Monitor intake‑output charts, fluid balance, and nutrition plans.
  • Handle ICU emergencies calmly and efficiently under pressure.
  • Maintain patient comfort, dignity, and confidentiality at all times.
  • Ensure compliance with NABH standards, hospital protocols, and patient safety guidelines.
  • Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement programs, and training sessions.
  • Maintain proper functioning and cleanliness of ICU equipment and patient care areas.
  • Educate patient attendants regarding ICU protocols and patient care updates.
  • Work efficiently in rotational shifts including nights, weekends, and emergencies.
  • Stay updated with advancements in critical care nursing practices.
  • Demonstrate teamwork, professionalism, and strong communication skills.
  • Contribute to improving patient outcomes and overall ICU care quality.
