Job Purpose
To assist the Nursing Superintendent in planning, coordinating, supervising, and managing nursing services across the hospital. The role is responsible for ensuring high-quality patient care, effective nursing operations, staff discipline, compliance with clinical standards, and continuous improvement in nursing practices.
Key Responsibilities
1. Nursing Operations
- Assist in the overall administration and management of nursing services.
- Ensure smooth and effective functioning of nursing units, wards, ICUs, OTs, emergency and other clinical areas.
- Monitor nursing manpower deployment and ensure adequate staffing as per patient requirements.
- Coordinate with Nursing Supervisors, Ward In-charges and HODs for daily operations.
- Ensure proper handover and continuity of patient care.
2. Patient Care & Quality
- Ensure adherence to hospital nursing protocols, policies, and standard operating procedures.
- Monitor quality and safety of patient care.
- Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control practices.
- Monitor medication administration, documentation, patient identification, and other nursing safety practices.
- Address patient and attendant concerns related to nursing services.
3. Staff Management
- Assist in recruitment, orientation, induction, training, and development of nursing staff.
- Monitor staff attendance, punctuality, discipline, grooming, and professional conduct.
- Identify training needs and coordinate competency development programs.
- Support performance appraisal and provide feedback to nursing staff.
- Manage staff allocation, shift planning, leave, and duty rosters.
4. Clinical & Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with applicable hospital accreditation and regulatory requirements such as NABH standards.
- Conduct regular rounds and nursing audits.
- Identify gaps in nursing practices and initiate corrective and preventive actions.
- Maintain required nursing records, reports, and documentation.
- Participate in hospital quality, safety, infection control, and clinical committee activities.
5. Coordination & Communication
- Coordinate with doctors, nursing teams, administration, HR, pharmacy, laboratory, housekeeping, biomedical, and other departments.
- Escalate critical operational and patient-care issues to the Nursing Superintendent.
- Ensure effective communication between nursing staff and other healthcare professionals.
- Participate in departmental meetings and communicate management decisions to nursing teams.
6. Inventory & Resource Management
- Monitor availability and appropriate utilization of nursing supplies, equipment, and consumables.
- Coordinate with stores and concerned departments for timely replenishment.
- Ensure proper maintenance and functioning of nursing equipment.
- Minimize wastage and ensure cost-effective utilization of resources.
7. Training & Development
- Assist in organizing continuing nursing education and skill-development programs.
- Ensure mandatory training and competency assessments are completed.
- Mentor junior nursing leaders and support professional development of nursing staff.
8. Emergency & Incident Management
- Support nursing teams during medical emergencies, mass casualty situations, and other critical incidents.
- Ensure appropriate escalation and documentation of adverse events and incidents.
- Participate in root-cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions.

Educational Qualification
- B.Sc. Nursing / Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing / GNM from a recognized institution.
- M.Sc. Nursing / MBA in Hospital Management or relevant qualification will be an added advantage.
- Valid registration with the applicable State Nursing Council.
Experience
- 812 years of relevant nursing experience, preferably in a multispecialty hospital.
- Prior experience in a nursing supervisory/managerial role is preferred.
- Experience in NABH-accredited hospitals will be an advantage.
