Job summary

Oldendorff Carriers in Mumbai seeks a senior technical analyst to evaluate vessel performance, using sea-going engine-room experience to assess machinery and hull performance. You will investigate anomalies and support operational decisions across the fleet.

You will mentor junior engineers, review fuel consumption trends, and collaborate with analytics and operations teams to improve data quality and performance metrics.

Qualifications

• Class 1 CoC and sea-going experience as Second Engineer are required.
• Eight or more years of sea-going experience across main engine types such as MAN B&W, WinGD or equivalent is required.
• Previous shore-based vessel performance experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Review and quality-check technical conclusions, root-cause analyses, fuel-correction methods and performance calculations before final sign-off.
• Monitor main engine and auxiliary engine performance trends using information provided by sailing staff.
• Plan and conduct vessel speed trials to establish accurate baseline performance data.
• Investigate unexplained fuel consumption increases, persistent vessel underperformance and recurring technical issues.
• Work with the analytics team to review and refine fuel consumption and power-correction methods using operational experience.
• Support the development and review of AI-enabled performance, diagnostics and voyage optimisation tools.
• Present authorised technical positions in owner-facing discussions and charter party performance disputes.
• Conduct fleet studies and provide clear, actionable feedback to commercial and operations teams, including quarterly fleet-wide performance analysis.
• Define requirements for fit-for-analysis data, validate noon reports and elevate data quality concerns to the relevant teams.
• Mentor, cross-train and review the work of assistant engineers across machinery and hull or propulsion areas.

About the role

You will provide senior technical analysis for vessel performance from our Technical Performance team in Mumbai. Using your sea-going engine-room experience, you will assess machinery and hull performance, investigate anomalies and build evidence-based conclusions that support operational and commercial decisions across the fleet.

What You Bring Along

• Strong analytical and technical report-writing skills.
• Ability to assess fuel consumption, engine load and machinery performance trends using limited or inconsistent operational data.
• Confidence explaining and defending technical conclusions to owners’ technical representatives.
• Strong practical understanding of shipboard machinery and propulsion systems, with the ability to assess how engine condition, auxiliary machinery, hull and propeller condition, weather and operating practices affect vessel performance and fuel consumption
• Ability to separate machinery or hull performance issues from weather effects and reporting errors.
• Willingness to adopt new analytical methods and AI-enabled performance and diagnostics tools.

Required / Preferred Education and Experience

• Class 1 Certificate of Competency and sea-going experience as a Second Engineer are required.
• Eight or more years of sea-going experience across main engine types such as MAN B&W, WinGD or equivalent is required.
• Previous shore-based vessel performance experience is preferred.
• Familiarity with voyage optimisation platforms and emissions regulations is preferred.
• Knowledge of hull coatings and energy-saving devices, including Mewis ducts and rotors, is preferred.
