Job description

Founded in 1921, OLDENDORFF CARRIERS combines its history as a German shipowner with the network of one of the world's leading drybulk operators. We currently control some 750 chartered and owned vessels of 67 mio tdw, and we carry around 330 mio tons of raw materials and semi-finished products across the seven seas each year. Our customers can expect 100% performance. All the way.

About the role

You will support the Technical Performance team by building and maintaining vessel performance models, safeguarding the data that feeds them, and turning complex maritime data into clear analysis for Performance, Chartering and Operations. This role combines naval architecture, hydrodynamics and data analytics to support practical decisions across the fleet.

Job Responsibilities
  • Build, calibrate and maintain speed-power and fuel-consumption models for individual vessels and vessel classes.
  • Validate model outputs and clearly identify where results can and cannot be relied upon.
  • Develop and refine reference and baseline curves, applying weather and sea-state corrections using recognised methods and standards.
  • Support hull and propeller performance monitoring, including fouling penalties, speed-loss analysis, drydock reviews and coating-effectiveness evaluations.
  • Manage the quality of performance inputs, including noon reports, high-frequency sensor data, weather hindcast and voyage data.
  • Develop anomaly-detection, gap-handling and validation rules, and document the data standards and quality gates used by downstream systems.
  • Investigate discrepancies between data sources and work with vessels, Operations and IT to resolve root causes.
  • Design and maintain dashboards covering hull performance, fuel efficiency, emissions compliance and voyage performance indicators.
  • Turn technical analysis into clear, decision-ready recommendations for Performance, Chartering, Operations and senior stakeholders.
  • Support voyage-optimisation workflows, assess optimisation outputs and help onboard or integrate vessel-performance and optimisation platforms.
What You Bring Along
  • Practical understanding of ship resistance and propulsion, speed-power relationships and fuel-consumption behaviour.
  • Ability to assess how operational and environmental factors affect vessel performance.
  • Strong knowledge of maritime data and the quality issues associated with noon reports, sensor feeds, weather and voyage data.
  • Hands-on ability using Python or an equivalent programming language, SQL and dashboarding tools.
  • Experience using vessel-performance, voyage-optimisation, weather-routing or voyage-management platforms.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical findings clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Analytical approach, attention to detail and confidence questioning unreliable model outputs or data.
Required / Preferred Education and Experience
  • A degree in Naval Architecture or a closely related discipline is required. Ocean Engineering with strong hydrodynamics exposure will also be considered.
  • Two to five years of experience in vessel performance, ship-performance monitoring or a comparable maritime-analytics role is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 19030, ISO 15016 and related vessel-performance standards and regulations is required.
  • Experience with dry-bulk fleets and their operational profiles is preferred.
  • Knowledge of weather-correction methods, including wind resistance, wave-added resistance and normalisation approaches, is preferred.
  • Exposure to statistical or machine-learning methods for performance modelling is preferred.
  • Experience building lightweight analytical applications, Python applications or web dashboards is preferred.
  • Understanding of hull-coating and grooming economics, drydock planning, and hull and propeller cleaning decisions is preferred.
What We Offer
  • Our corporate culture is special: relaxed and international, open and traditionally with flat hierarchies.
  • Since the very beginning, teamwork and quick decision making have been our success factors. Encouraging our employees to realize their ideas and initiatives is as important to us.
