Job summary

Egon Oldendorff Management GmbH in Mumbai seeks a senior voyage optimizer to own safe and efficient routing from our Voyage Optimisation Centre in Mumbai. You will assess weather, plan passages and advise Masters across the fleet.

With Chief Mate or Master Mariner credentials, you will work a rotating 24/7 shift, monitor performance, maintain voyage records and contribute to fuel efficiency and emissions reductions.

Job description

About the role

You will take ownership of safe and efficient voyage routing from our Voyage Optimisation Centre in Mumbai. Using your senior seagoing experience, you will assess weather, plan and adjust passages, monitor vessel performance, and provide clear, practical advice to Masters across the fleet.

Job Responsibilities

• Plan and adjust ocean passages using live meteorological and ocean data, balancing safety, voyage time and fuel efficiency.
• Monitor vessel speed, fuel consumption, weather exposure and voyage performance against the expected plan.
• Identify differences between expected and actual performance, investigate the causes and recommend suitable action.
• Work closely with Masters at sea, providing clear routing advice while respecting the Master’s authority and professional judgement.
• Maintain accurate voyage records, routing updates, performance reports and handover notes.
• Support fleet-wide improvements in routing, voyage optimisation, fuel efficiency and emissions reduction.
• Work a rotating 24/7 shift pattern, including nights and weekends, to provide continuous support to vessels.
• Use available optimisation, analysis and AI tools responsibly, and contribute ideas to improve routing processes and systems.

What You Bring Along

• Strong weather judgement and disciplined passage-planning capability.
• Ability to make and explain timely routing recommendations using weather, safety and vessel performance data.
• Confidence to take ownership of decisions while maintaining a constructive advisory partnership with Masters.
• Clear communication and the ability to remain calm and organised during changing or difficult conditions.
• Team-focused approach, willingness to share knowledge, and interest in improving routing systems and AI-enabled tools.

Required / Preferred Education and Experience

Chief Mate or Master Mariner Certificate of Competency, Class 1 / Unlimited, is required.

• Sailing experience as a Chief Officer or in command is required.
• Dry bulk experience is preferred. Container or tanker experience will also be considered
• Previous shore-based experience in a routing or similar role is preferred.
