Job Description

The Staff Nurse – OT provides perioperative nursing care and supports the surgical team in delivering safe and efficient surgical services. The includes preparing the operating theatre, checking surgical instruments and equipment, assisting during procedures, maintaining sterile conditions, monitoring patient safety, and ensuring accurate documentation. The nurse also coordinates with surgeons, anaesthesia personnel, and other departments to support smooth operating theatre operations.

• Prepare the operating theatre and ensure readiness for scheduled surgical procedures.
• Check the availability and functionality of surgical instruments and medical equipment.
• Verify patient identity, surgical site, procedure details, and required documentation.
• Assist in preparing patients for surgery according to hospital protocols.
• Ensure completion of preoperative safety checks and surgical checklists.
• Maintain aseptic technique and ensure the integrity of the sterile field.
• Assist the surgical team with instrument preparation and handling according to assigned duties.
• Perform scrub or circulating nurse responsibilities according to training and competency.
• Ensure proper arrangement of surgical instruments, sterile packs, sutures, and consumables.
• Assist with safe patient positioning and appropriate pressure-point protection.
• Coordinate with anaesthesia personnel during patient preparation and surgery.
• Participate in surgical instrument, swab, and needle counts according to hospital policy.
• Monitor adherence to infection prevention and surgical safety protocols.
• Ensure specimens are labelled correctly and transferred to the appropriate department.
• Assist with patient transfer to the recovery area after surgery.
• Complete perioperative nursing documentation and maintain accurate OT records.
• Ensure appropriate cleaning and preparation of the operating theatre between procedures.
• Monitor surgical supply levels and report shortages to the OT In-charge.
• Report equipment malfunctions, safety concerns, and incidents promptly.
• Follow biomedical waste management and hospital infection control procedures.
