1. Job Purpose

To provide safe, compassionate, and comprehensive nursing care to patients undergoing cardiothoracic and vascular surgical procedures. The Staff Nurse will be responsible for patient assessment, medication administration, pre-operative and post-operative care, monitoring of vital parameters, coordination with the medical team, and maintaining high standards of patient safety and infection control.

2. Key Responsibilities

Provide comprehensive nursing care to CTVS patients according to their clinical condition and individual care plans.

Assess and monitor patients regularly, including vital signs, neurological status, respiratory status, cardiac rhythm, and hemodynamic parameters.

Monitor patients before and after cardiothoracic and vascular surgical procedures.

Identify and promptly report changes in patients' clinical condition to the treating consultant or senior nursing staff.

Provide appropriate care to patients with chest tubes, drains, catheters, central lines, arterial lines, and other invasive devices.

Assist in maintaining patient comfort, hygiene, nutrition, mobility, and psychological well-being.

Provide specialized post-operative care following procedures such as CABG, valve surgery, thoracic surgery, and vascular surgery.

B. Medication & Treatment

Administer medications, IV fluids, blood products, and other prescribed treatments safely and accurately.

Verify medication orders, dosage, route, timing, allergies, and patient identification before administration.

Monitor patients for therapeutic response and adverse drug reactions.

Maintain accurate medication and treatment records.

Assist doctors during procedures and emergency interventions as required.

C. Pre-Operative Care

Prepare patients physically and psychologically for surgery.

Verify patient identification, consent, investigations, and pre-operative checklists.

Ensure required investigations and reports are available before surgery.

Prepare and educate patients regarding the surgical procedure and post-operative care.

Coordinate with OT, laboratory, radiology, blood bank, and other departments as required.

D. Post-Operative Care

Closely monitor patients during the immediate post-operative period.

Monitor cardiac rhythm, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, respiratory status, urine output, drains, and other relevant parameters.

Observe for complications such as bleeding, arrhythmias, respiratory distress, hypotension, infection, reduced urine output, or altered consciousness.

Maintain accurate intake-output records and fluid balance.

Assist with early mobilization, respiratory exercises, and rehabilitation as directed.

Provide appropriate wound and surgical-site care.

E. Emergency & Critical Care

Respond promptly to medical and surgical emergencies.

Assist in CPR, resuscitation, and emergency procedures as per hospital protocols.

Maintain readiness of emergency equipment and supplies.

Recognize signs of clinical deterioration and elevate immediately.

Assist in management of unstable patients and transfer to ICU or higher level of care when required.

Follow standard precautions and hospital infection-control policies.

Maintain aseptic technique during procedures and handling of invasive devices.

Ensure proper disposal of biomedical waste and sharps.

Follow patient identification and medication-safety protocols.

Maintain a safe environment for patients and healthcare staff.

Report incidents, near misses, and adverse events as per hospital policy.

G. Documentation

Maintain accurate and timely nursing records and patient documentation.

Record vital signs, nursing interventions, medication administration, intake-output, drains, and patient progress.

Maintain nursing handover records and communicate relevant clinical information during shift changes.

Ensure proper documentation of procedures and adverse events.

H. Patient & Family Education

Educate patients and relatives regarding treatment, medication, wound care, diet, mobility, and recovery.

Provide instructions regarding post-operative precautions and follow-up care.

Communicate respectfully and empathetically with patients and their families.

Maintain patient confidentiality and privacy at all times.

I. Team Coordination

Coordinate effectively with consultants, residents, nursing supervisors, technicians, physiotherapists, dieticians, and other healthcare professionals.

Participate in ward rounds and multidisciplinary discussions when required.

Ensure proper and effective shift handover.

Support junior nursing staff and participate in departmental training activities.

4. Experience
