Job summary

The role requires hands-on expertise with SolidWorks and AutoCAD, DFMEA/DFM/DFA, GD&T, and selecting motors, gearboxes, bearings, and pneumatic components.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience designing Special Purpose Machines (SPMs) or custom automation equipment.
  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD with good drafting standards.
  • Experience with DFMEA, DFM/DFA, GD&T, tolerance analysis, and design validation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design and development of SPMs from concept to commissioning.
  • Prepare 3D models, assemblies, manufacturing drawings, and BOMs.
  • Apply DFM/DFA and DFMEA to improve manufacturability, serviceability, and quality.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure on-time delivery and cost targets.

About the Role

Based on our ongoing and upcoming projects, the Design & Engineering Department is expanding to strengthen our engineering capabilities.

We are looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the design and development of Special Purpose Machines (SPMs). The ideal candidate will be responsible for delivering reliable, manufacturable, and cost-effective engineering solutions throughout the complete product lifecycle from concept development and detailed design to manufacturing, installation, commissioning, and continuous product improvement.

The role requires strong technical expertise, engineering decision, and cross-functional ensure successful execution of projects meeting customer requirement, quality, cost, and schedule requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the mechanical design and development of Special Purpose Machines (SPMs) from concept through commissioning.
  • Develop innovative machine concepts and detailed mechanical designs based on customer and project requirements.
  • Prepare 3D models, assemblies, fabrication drawings, manufacturing drawings, and detailed engineering documentation using SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  • Perform engineering calculations, tolerance stack-up analysis, and functional validation to ensure reliable machine performance.
  • Select and size motors, gearboxes, bearings, shafts, pneumatic components, and power transmission systems based on engineering calculations and application requirements.
  • Prepare Bills of Materials (BOMs), material specifications, and technical documentation for manufacturing and procurement.
  • Review and approve engineering drawings, BOMs, and design documentation before release.
  • Apply Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFM/DFA) principles to improve manufacturability, ease of assembly, serviceability, and product quality.
  • Conduct Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) to identify and mitigate design risks during the development stage.
  • Drive Value Engineering and Cost Engineering initiatives to optimize machine performance, manufacturing cost, and lifecycle cost without compromising quality, safety, or functionality.
  • Coordinate closely with Production, Procurement, Electrical, Automation, Quality, and Installation teams to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Provide technical support during fabrication, assembly, testing, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), installation, and commissioning.
  • Troubleshoot design-related issues during manufacturing and site execution and implement effective engineering solutions.
  • Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for machine failures and recurring issues, and implement permanent corrective actions.
  • Participate in project planning, technical reviews, risk assessment, and cost estimation activities.
  • Develop and maintain engineering standards, reusable machine modules, and design best practices.
  • Mentor junior design engineers and support their technical development.
  • Ensure all engineering deliverables comply with company standards, applicable engineering codes, safety requirements, and project timelines.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in designing Special Purpose Machines (SPMs) or custom automation equipment.
  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and engineering drafting standards.
  • Sound knowledge of machine design, mechanisms, machine elements, fabrication, machining processes, welding, and material selection.
  • Strong understanding of pneumatics, power transmission systems, structural design, and machine assemblies.
  • Hands-on experience in the selection and sizing of motors, gearboxes, bearings, shafts, couplings, chains, belts, and pneumatic systems.
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, engineering calculations, and design validation.
  • Practical experience in Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFM/DFA), Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA), Value Engineering, Cost Engineering, and Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
  • Good understanding of manufacturing processes including machining, fabrication, sheet metal, welding, assembly, and surface finishing.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and coordinate effectively with cross-functional teams.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience in designing heavy industrial machinery involving conveyors, rotating equipment, fabricated structures, shafts, bearings, power transmission systems, and material handling equipment is highly preferred.
  • Experience in automation equipment, conveyors, pick-and-place systems, packaging machines, recycling equipment, waste processing machinery, or similar industrial systems.
  • Exposure to onsite installation, commissioning, FAT(Factory Acceptance testing) and customer support.
  • Experience in design standardization, modular machine design, and engineering documentation systems.
  • Ability to lead small engineering teams and mentor junior engineers.
  • Familiarity with applicable machine safety standards, engineering best practices, and industrial regulations.

The technical evaluation may also include:

  • Reviewing engineering drawings and identifying improvements.
  • Performing basic engineering calculations.
  • Developing a conceptual design based on a given requirement.
Round 3 – Design Assessment

Candidates may be required to complete a practical design assignment to assess their engineering and design capabilities. The assessment may include:

  • Developing a concept for a given application.
  • Performing design calculations.
  • Selecting suitable motors, gearboxes, bearings, shafts, and pneumatic components.
  • Preparing a basic 3D model, manufacturing drawings, and BOM using SolidWorks.
  • Explaining the design approach, assumptions, manufacturability, and cost optimization.
Round 4 – Final Technical Discussion

A detailed discussion with the technical panel to assess:

  • Engineering knowledge and practical experience.
  • Project ownership and execution.
  • Design review and decision-making approach.
  • Problem-solving and troubleshooting methodology.
  • Cross-functional coordination and leadership ability.
