Job summary

Dr M G R Educational and Research Institute in Chennai seeks a Project Director to provide strategic oversight, executive leadership, and operational management for civil infrastructure and construction of educational projects across regional and state locations.

The Director will oversee Project Managers, direct multi-disciplinary engineering teams, manage large budgets, and ensure projects are executed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to contractual standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Construction Management (Master's degree/MBA preferred).
• 12-20+ years in civil construction/infrastructure with senior leadership experience.

Responsibilities

• Planning & Governance: carry out project master plans, schedules, resources, and execution frameworks from pre-construction to handover.
• Financial Management: coordinate budgets, P&L, cash flow, contracts, and cost control.
• Team Leadership: lead Senior Project Managers, Project Engineers, Site Directors, and sub-contractors.
• Stakeholder & Client Relations: liaise with clients, government authorities, municipal bodies, consultancies, and JV partners.
• Contract & Risk Management: negotiate contracts, manage claims, and mitigate risks.
• Quality & Safety Assurance: ensure compliance with HSE regulations and QA/QC standards.

Job Overview

The Project Director - is expected to provide strategic Oversight, executive leadership, Operational management, deliverables relating to the Civil Infrastructure and Construction of Educational projects in different Regional and State locations. The Project Director should oversee Project Managers, direct multi-disciplinary engineering teams, manage large scale budgets, and ensure projects are executed safely, on schedule, within the budget, and in accordance with contractual standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Planning & Governance: Understanding and Carrying out of Project master plans, major schedules, resource allocation needs, and execution frameworks from pre-construction through handover.
• Financial Management: Understanding and coordinating budgets of major project/s allocations, Profit and Loss responsibility, cash flow planning, engineering, contract variations, and cost control.
• Team Leadership: Direct, mentor, and manage Senior Project Managers, Project Engineers, Site Directors, and sub-contractors.
• Stakeholder & Client Relations: Serve as the Lead-head for executive liaisoning for clients, government authorities, municipal bodies, consultancies, and joint venture partners, if any.
• Contract & Risk Management: Engage in high-value contract negotiations, manage claims and dispute resolutions, and identify and alert proactive risk mitigation strategies.
• Quality & Safety Assurance: Enforce continuous compliance of procedures with HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) regulations, local statutory norms, site safety standards, and civil engineering QA/QC standards.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Education: Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Construction Management (Master's degree/MBA preferred).
• Experience: 12-20+ years in civil construction/infrastructure (Building structures, roads, bridges, commercial, high-rise, industrial, or heavy civil), with at least 5+ years in senior executive leadership. Experience in handling Educational Institution related projects will be an added advantage
• Certifications: PMP (Project Management Professional), PE (Professional Engineer license), or CIOB/ICE charterships are strongly preferred.
