Job Overview:
We are looking for a Packaging Engineer responsible for developing, costing, testing, and optimising packaging solutions for home décor products.
The primary objective of this role is to develop packaging that protects products during handling and international transportation while continuously reducing packaging and freight costs.
This is not a 100% desk-based role. The candidate will be required to spend significant time on the factory floor, working closely with packing, production, quality, purchase, merchandising, and packaging suppliers to identify inefficiencies, implement improvements, and ensure adherence to approved packaging standards.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Packaging Development & Design
- Develop packaging solutions for metal, glass, wood, and mixed-material home décor products.
- Design inner and outer packaging using corrugated cartons, partitions, inserts, foam, honeycomb, moulded pulp, and other protective materials.
- Develop packaging for fragile, heavy, irregularly shaped, and high-value products.
- Prepare packaging specifications, packing instructions, carton markings, and packaging standards.
- Develop packaging samples and prototypes for buyer approval and production trials.
2. Packaging Costing & Cost Reduction
- Prepare detailed packaging cost breakups, including material consumption, components, labour, and other applicable costs.
- Analyse existing packaging costs and identify opportunities for cost reduction without compromising product safety or quality.
- Optimise carton dimensions, packaging materials, inserts, cushioning, and packing methods to reduce material consumption.
- Compare alternative packaging materials and suppliers to achieve better cost and performance.
3. Container & Freight Optimisation
- Optimise carton sizes and packing configurations to maximise container utilisation and cubic efficiency.
- Analyse carton-to-product ratios and packing quantities to reduce wasted space.
- Work on improving container loading and overall freight efficiency.
4. Testing & Quality
- Conduct or coordinate packaging tests such as drop tests, vibration tests, stacking/compression tests, and transit simulation tests.
- Analyse packaging failures and identify root causes.
- Implement corrective actions to reduce transit damage, breakage, and customer complaints.
- Ensure packaging is suitable for international handling and transportation conditions.
5. Factory Floor & Packing Operations
- Spend significant time on the production and packing floor to monitor actual packing practices.
- Ensure packing teams follow approved packaging specifications and methods.
- Identify wastage, inefficient packing methods, excess material usage, and process gaps.
- Train packing staff on correct packing procedures.
6. Cross-Functional Coordination
- Coordinate with Production, Quality, Merchandising, Purchase, Suppliers, and Packing teams for packaging development and implementation.
- Work with packaging suppliers to develop new materials, improve specifications, and achieve competitive costs.
7. Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain packaging BOMs, cost sheets, packaging specifications, test reports, approved samples, and packing instructions.
- Ensure packaging complies with buyer-specific requirements and applicable international packaging standards.
8. Sustainable Packaging
- Identify opportunities to use recyclable, reusable, and environmentally responsible packaging materials.
- Reduce unnecessary packaging material and wastage while maintaining required product protection.
- Evaluate sustainable alternatives based on cost, performance, availability, and buyer requirements.

Required Qualifications and Experience:
- Diploma or degree in Packaging Technology, Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
- Relevant experience in packaging development, packaging costing, cost optimisation, or export packaging.
- Experience in industries such as home décor, handicrafts, furniture, glassware, metal products, consumer goods, or export manufacturing will be preferred.
- Strong knowledge of corrugated boxes, cartons, protective packaging, cushioning materials, and export packing.
- Understanding of packaging for fragile, heavy, and irregularly shaped products.
