Job summary

Ipscom Returnable in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, seeks a packaging design engineer with 3–8 years of experience in returnable or industrial packaging. The role focuses on designing innovative packaging concepts, optimizing costs, and collaborating with suppliers to source sustainable materials.

You will work with product designers to meet requirements, conduct testing, and establish BOMs and specifications for new products while maintaining documentation and SOPs for packing sequences.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Packaging Technology, Industrial Design, or related field.
  • 3–8 years of relevant experience in returnable or industrial packaging design and development.
  • Proficient in Solidworks.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop innovative returnable packaging concepts to support logistics and supply chain efficiency.
  • Analyze and optimize existing packaging solutions for cost-effectiveness, durability, and sustainability.
  • Collaborate with material suppliers to source cost-effective and environmentally friendly packaging materials.
  • Work closely with product designers to ensure packaging meets product requirements and functional needs.
  • Conduct testing and validation of new and existing packaging designs to ensure quality and compliance with standards.
  • Establish packaging and manufacturing specifications at the part-number level for new product introductions.
  • Evaluate vendor prototypes and provide constructive feedback or suggest alternative solutions.
  • Prepare and maintain packaging documentation, including SOPs for packing sequences and inspection plans.
  • Share finalized packaging documents with Operations.
  • Lead and coordinate design efforts with internal teams and external vendors to develop optimal packaging solutions.
  • Review and resolve packaging-related issues with suppliers, factories, service providers, and vendors.
  • Stay updated on latest packaging technologies and industry trends.
  • Perform cost analysis of packaging processes and identify opportunities for cost reduction across the supply chain.
  • Prepare Bills of Materials (BOM) with cost estimates and suggest alternatives to stakeholders.
  • Provide weekly and monthly reports on packaging activities, improvements, and cost savings.
  • Advise senior management on packaging trends and innovative solutions.

Design & Development:

  • Validate packaging tests and inspection plans to ensure quality, safety, and compliance with industry regulations and standards.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date packaging specifications and procedural documents.
  • Share finalized packaging documents and instructions with the Operations team.
Collaboration & Coordination:
  • Lead and coordinate design efforts with internal teams and external vendors to develop optimal packaging solutions.
  • Review and resolve packaging-related issues with suppliers, factories, service providers, and vendors.
  • Stay updated on the latest packaging technologies, trends, and industry innovations.
Cost Estimation & Reduction:
  • Perform cost analysis of existing packaging processes and recommend improvements.
  • Identify opportunities for cost reduction across the supply chain through packaging design or material changes.
  • Prepare Bills of Material (BOM) with cost estimates and suggest alternatives to customers or internal stakeholders.
Reporting & Strategic Input:
  • Provide weekly and monthly reports on packaging activities, improvements, and cost savings.
  • Advise senior management on packaging trends, strategic improvements, and innovative solutions.
Preferred candidate profile
  • Education: Bachelor's degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Packaging Technology, Industrial Design, or a related field.
  • Experience: 3-8 years of relevant experience in returnable or industrial packaging design and development.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Proficient in Solidworks.
