Detroit Engineered Products (DEP) is seeking an experienced engineer to lead the design and development of automotive closure systems such as doors, hoods, tailgates, and sunroofs from concept to production.

The role requires deep CATIA V5 and 3DEXPERIENCE expertise, strong collaboration with BIW, hinges, seals and locking mechanisms, and the ability to guide cross‑functional teams toward timely, cost‑effective launches.

Qualifications

Job description

  • Extensive experience in design and development of Side and Rear Closures systems.
  • Strong knowledge of automotive standards, safety requirements and regulations.
  • Minimum 7 years experience in New Part Development.
  • Strong communication skill is mandatory to handle Program Stake Holders & Suppliers.
  • Exceptional CATIA V5 Skills. 3DX experience will be preferred.
  • Good Knowledge in Teamcenter Engineering & Vismockup.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with others.

Domain knowledge
  • Expertise in designing and developing automotive closures (doors, hoods, trunk lids, tailgates, etc.). Knowledge of the structural requirements, functionality, and integration of these systems within the vehicle architecture.
  • Understanding how closure systems integrate with the rest of the vehicle body, including the body-in-white (BIW), hinges, seals, and locking mechanisms.
  • Knowledge of safety standards related to closure systems, including crash safety (e.g., pedestrian safety), regulatory compliance, and industry standards (FMVSS, ECE regulations, etc.).
  • Familiarity with materials used in closure systems (e.g., steel, aluminum, composites) and the corresponding manufacturing processes (e.g., stamping, welding, injection molding). An understanding of the balance between cost, weight, strength, and manufacturability is key.
  • Knowledge of how to design for ease of assembly, cost-efficiency, and manufacturability in high-volume automotive production environments.
  • Lead the design and development of automotive closure systems (e.g., doors, hoods, tailgates, sunroofs, etc.) from initial concept through to production, ensuring compliance with engineering standards, quality, and regulatory requirements.
  • Drive the design and development of closure systems. Participate in brainstorming, prototyping, testing, and refining designs. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure timely product launches.
  • Create detailed 3D models using CATIA V5/V6 and 3DEXPERIENCE (3DX) platforms for design, simulation, and analysis. Ensure accurate design documentation, including CAD drawings, technical specifications, and Bill of Materials (BOM).
  • Lead design reviews with internal teams and customers, providing technical guidance and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams (e.g., manufacturing, quality, testing) to integrate closure systems into the overall vehicle design.
  • Identify areas for improvement in the closure system design and contribute to process improvements, cost reduction strategies, and innovation in design practices.
