Role Level: Manager Shop Floor Manufacturing

1. Role Purpose

The Manufacturing Manager will be responsible for planning, managing and continuously improving the complete shop-floor manufacturing operations for solar mounting structures and associated steel fabrication. The role will own production planning, manpower deployment, machine utilisation, process control, productivity, material yield, quality coordination, safety, cost control and timely completion of production and dispatch requirements.

2. Key Responsibilities

Production & Shop-Floor Management

• Manage end-to-end fabrication and manufacturing of solar mounting structures and related steel components.
• Supervise cutting, punching/drilling, bending/forming, welding, grinding, finishing, assembly, packing and dispatch activities.
• Prepare and execute daily, weekly and monthly production plans in line with project requirements, BOMs, drawings and dispatch schedules.
• Allocate work centres, machines, manpower and shifts to achieve production targets.
• Monitor shop-floor progress throughout the day and take corrective action against bottlenecks, delays and production shortfalls.
• Ensure production is carried out strictly as per approved drawings, specifications, process sheets and work instructions.
• Maintain disciplined shop-floor operations, 5S, housekeeping and material flow.

Production Planning, PPC & Coordination

• Coordinate closely with Design/Engineering, Purchase, Stores, Quality, Projects and Dispatch teams.
• Review production requirements, BOMs, drawings, material availability and delivery priorities before releasing work orders.
• Develop realistic production schedules based on available capacity, manpower, machines and material.
• Identify capacity constraints and recommend additional manpower, machines, tooling, shifts or subcontracting where required.
• Track order-wise production status and provide management with regular MIS and exception reports.
• Ensure critical components are prioritised to support project-wise dispatch commitments.

Solar Structure Technical & Fabrication Expertise

• Demonstrate hands-on understanding of solar module mounting structures and steel fabrication.
• Understand fabrication of posts/columns, rafters, purlins, rails, bracing members, cleats, base plates, brackets and other structural components.
• Ensure correct interpretation and implementation of fabrication drawings, dimensions, hole patterns, tolerances and assembly requirements.
• Monitor welding parameters, joint preparation, fit-up, distortion control and finishing practices.
• Ensure proper drilling/punching accuracy, bending angles, component dimensions and interchangeability during assembly.
• Understand fabrication of MS/structural steel and coated/galvanised components, as applicable to the company's products.

Quality & Process Control

• Work with QA/QC to establish and maintain process quality standards at each manufacturing stage.
• Ensure dimensional accuracy, hole position/pitch, bending angle, weld quality, fit-up and assembly conformity.
• Minimise rejection, rework and customer/project complaints through effective process controls.
• Investigate manufacturing defects and conduct root-cause analysis with corrective and preventive actions.
• Ensure identification and traceability of material and fabricated components wherever required.
• Implement first-piece approval and in-process inspection practices for critical components.

• Material, Yield & Cost Control
• Coordinate with Stores and Purchase to ensure timely availability of required raw materials and consumables.
• Monitor steel consumption, scrap generation, material yield and wastage.
• Control usage of welding wire/electrodes, gas, cutting tools, abrasives and other consumables.
• Identify opportunities to reduce fabrication cost, labour hours, scrap and rework without compromising quality.
• Monitor overtime and manpower cost against production requirements.
• Maintain proper control over WIP, finished goods and production-related inventory.

Manpower & Team Management

• Lead, supervise and develop welders, fabricators, fitters, machine operators, helpers and other shop-floor personnel.
• Prepare manpower deployment and shift plans based on production requirements.
• Assess manpower productivity and identify training requirements.
• Set clear daily work targets and monitor individual/team performance.
• Maintain discipline and resolve day-to-day shop-floor manpower issues.
• Build a culture of accountability, productivity, safety, quality and teamwork.

Machine, Tooling & Maintenance Coordination

• Monitor availability and utilisation of fabrication machinery, welding equipment, drilling/punching machines, presses, bending equipment and related tools.
• Coordinate with Maintenance for preventive maintenance and timely breakdown resolution.
• Monitor machine downtime and identify recurring equipment problems.
• Ensure proper use, storage and condition of jigs, fixtures, gauges, tools and measuring equipment.
• Suggest process automation, tooling improvements and productivity-enhancing equipment wherever commercially justified.

Safety & Compliance

• Ensure strict compliance with plant safety procedures and applicable statutory requirements.
• Ensure use of appropriate PPE for welding, cutting, grinding, lifting and other fabrication activities.
• Maintain safe practices for material handling, cranes/hoists, electrical equipment, compressed gases and hot work.
• Ensure fire prevention, emergency preparedness and safe housekeeping on the shop floor.
• Report and investigate safety incidents/near misses and implement corrective actions.
• Promote 5S, housekeeping and a safe working environment.

Continuous Improvement

• Drive improvements in productivity, throughput, material yield, quality and manufacturing cost.
• Identify and eliminate bottlenecks, unnecessary movement, waiting time and process losses.
• Introduce standard work methods, visual controls and production monitoring systems.
• Use practical Lean/5S/Kaizen principles to improve shop-floor performance.
• Develop and maintain standard operating procedures and process checklists for critical activities.
• Benchmark production methods and recommend improved fabrication techniques where appropriate.

Documentation & MIS

• Maintain daily production reports, machine utilisation, manpower deployment and downtime records.
• Prepare order-wise production and dispatch status reports.
• Track rejection, rework, scrap, material consumption and production efficiency.
• Maintain records of production targets versus actual output.
• Provide timely MIS and escalation reports to the Plant Head / Operations Head.
• Ensure proper documentation of process changes, corrective actions and production-related records.

4. Required Qualifications & Experience

• B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering or relevant technical qualification.
• 58 years of relevant manufacturing/fabrication experience.
• Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in solar mounting structure / solar steel fabrication is mandatory.
• Strong practical knowledge of MS/structural steel fabrication, welding, cutting, drilling/punching, bending and assembly.
• Experience in managing a fabrication shop with multiple work centres and shop-floor manpower.
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical/structural fabrication drawings and BOMs.
• Experience with production planning, capacity planning, material coordination and production MIS.
• Working knowledge of quality control, root-cause analysis, 5S and basic Lean/Kaizen practices.
• Good knowledge of workplace safety and safe fabrication practices.

5. Mandatory Requirements

• Hands-on experience in manufacturing/fabrication of solar mounting structures is mandatory.

9. Note for Recruitment

Candidates should preferably have direct experience in solar mounting structure manufacturing rather than only general fabrication. Experience in steel fabrication alone may be considered only where the candidate demonstrates strong understanding of solar structure components, fabrication drawings, production planning and shop-floor management.
