The role of the Technical Writer in the mechanical engineering department is responsible for creating accurate, structured, and technically sound documentation that explains mechanical systems, components, and processes to engineers, technicians, and end-users. This role demands both engineering knowledge and linguistic clarity
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain technical documentation including product specifications, user manuals, installation guides, maintenance instruction for gangway systems.
- Collaborate with mechanical engineers, designers, and product managers to gather technical information.
- Translate complex engineering concepts into easy-to-understand language for internal and external use (customers).
- Ensure documentation complies with industry standards and company branding guidelines.
- Create illustrations, diagrams, and CAD-based visuals to support written content.
- Review and update documentation based on product changes, feedback, and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare operation manuals, assembly instructions, maintenance guides, and technical specifications for mechanical products and systems.
- Document manufacturing processes, quality control procedures, and safety standards.
Interpret Engineering Data
- Translate CAD drawings, schematics, and engineering calculations into clear, descriptive text.
- Explain concepts like tolerances, material properties, stress analysis, and thermodynamics in user-friendly language.
Ensure Technical Accuracy
- Collaborate with mechanical engineers to validate content for precision and compliance with industry standards (e.g., ISO 9001, …..).
- Maintain consistency in terminology, units, and technical symbols.
Visual Integration
- Incorporate exploded views, cross-sectional diagrams, and flowcharts to complement textual explanations.
- Use CAD tools (e.g., Solidworks, CATIA V5, 3Dx..) for extracting and annotating visuals.
Language and Style
- Write in clear, concise, and structured language suitable for technical audiences.
- Apply controlled vocabulary and standardized formats for readability and compliance.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Proven experience as a Technical Writer or similar role in an engineering environment.
- Strong understanding of mechanical systems, manufacturing processes, and engineering terminology.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Proficiency in documentation tools (e.g., MS Office,).
- Familiarity with CAD software for extracting visuals (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Catia V5, 3Dx).
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects parallel to each other.
- Attention to detail with a high level of accuracy and accountability.
- Knowledge of ISO standards for technical documentation.
- Experience with content management systems and version control tools.
- Basic understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
- Ability to create technical illustrations using graphic tools.
