Job description

Financial Controller — Volo Health TPA, Mumbai

Volo Health TPA is growing fast, and we are looking for a Chartered Accountant in Mumbai to take charge of finance as Financial Controller.

Being upfront about the profile: we want someone 6 to 8 years post-qualification. This is not a CFO or Head of Finance hire, and we are not looking for someone who has already run a large finance organisation. We want a CA who is sharp, commercially minded, and for whom this is the first job where the whole finance function is theirs. If you do it well, the role will outgrow the title, and that is the point.

What you will own
The commercial work
  • Reviewing and negotiating the contracts that determine how we make money: insurer service agreements, hospital and provider network tariffs, SLAs and pricing constructs. You will be in the room, not reviewing the draft after it is signed.
  • Vendor negotiations across technology, manpower, medical audit and administration. We spend real money here and we expect it to be spent well.
  • Cost control with a point of view. Cost per claim processed, cost to service a policy, manpower productivity, and where the operating model gets expensive as we scale.
  • Working with the claims and operations teams closely enough to know what is actually driving the numbers, and to tell us when the answer is uncomfortable.
The controllership
  • Full ownership of the books, the monthly close, and the reporting the leadership team runs the business on
  • Reconciliation of claims float, insurer receivables and hospital and provider payables. This is the core of a TPA's balance sheet and it rewards someone who gets to the bottom of things.
  • Statutory compliance end to end: GST, TDS, income tax, ROC and IRDAI-related reporting
  • Statutory and internal audits
  • Building the controls and processes a business growing at this rate needs, ideally before growth breaks something
Who this is for
  • CA with 6 to 8 years post-qualification, in Mumbai or ready to move here
  • Someone who thinks commercially, not only as an accountant. If you have never argued about a price or pushed back on a contract clause, this will be a stretch.
  • Insurance, healthcare or BFSI exposure is useful. A strong services or multi-entity background works just as well.
  • Genuinely ambitious about where they want to be in five years, and honest about what they have not done yet
  • Serious Excel skills and hands-on comfort with an accounting or ERP system
  • Someone who writes clearly and can explain a number to a person who does not work in finance
One thing to be clear about

This is a hands-on role. You will have a team, but it is a lean one, and you will prepare as much as you review. That is what makes it a good job at this stage of a career and a frustrating one for anybody who has moved past it.

What you get

A business that is scaling, direct access to the promoters, no layers between you and the decisions, and a seat in the commercial conversations rather than a summary of them afterwards. Compensation will be competitive for the right candidate.
