Job title: Engineering Manager – MEP (Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing)
Contract type: Permanent, full-time
Sector: MEP / electro-mechanical contracting
Experience: Approximately 15 years
Salary & package:Competitive – to be confirmed
About the opportunity
Our client is a well-established electro-mechanical (MEP) contractor with a portfolio of large-scale, technically complex projects spanning commercial, hospitality, aviation, healthcare, data centre and mixed-use developments. The business is strengthening its engineering capability in Chennai and is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to provide senior technical leadership across the full MEP design and delivery cycle.
This is a technical authority role rather than a purely administrative one. The successful candidate will sit at the point where design meets construction – making sure what is drawn can be built, safely, compliantly, on programme and to cost.
The role
Reporting to senior engineering leadership, the Engineering Manager will own the technical integrity of MEP engineering output across a portfolio of projects. You will lead a multi-discipline engineering team, interrogate designs for constructability, resolve cross-discipline interface and coordination issues before they reach site, and act as the final escalation point for complex technical decisions.
Key responsibilities
- Lead, develop and manage a multi-discipline engineering team covering HVAC, electrical, public health/plumbing and fire protection.
- Own the design-to-construction interface: review and challenge consultant design, direct the development and approval of shop and combined services drawings, and ensure every design released to site is buildable, compliant and commercially sound.
- Act as cross-discipline technical authority – arbitrate technical decisions, resolve clashes and interface conflicts, and approve engineering deviations, technical submittals and value-engineering proposals.
- Drive constructability and buildability reviews, early-stage design risk assessments and lessons-learned feedback loops from site back into design.
- Oversee BIM/MEP coordination, clash detection and model integrity against agreed LOD and project BIM execution standards.
- Govern technical submittals, material and equipment approvals, load calculations, system selections and method statements.
- Interface with clients, consultants, project and site teams, procurement and subcontractors; represent the business in design workshops and technical review meetings.
- Ensure compliance with project specifications and applicable codes and standards (ASHRAE, CIBSE, NFPA, BS/EN, IEC and relevant IS codes).
- Support tendering and pre-construction: technical scope assessment, bid-stage design review, and input into estimating assumptions and risk registers.
- Establish and enforce engineering standards, QA/QC procedures, document control and drawing management protocols.
- Provide technical input to testing, commissioning, handover and close-out, including O&M documentation and as-built verification.
- Mentor and develop engineers, manage resource allocation and workload, and build long-term technical capability within the team.
Candidate profile
- Approximately 15 years' MEP engineering experience gained with contractors, specialist MEP subcontractors and/or design consultancies.
- Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (B.E./B.Tech or equivalent).
- Strong, demonstrable exposure to the design–construction interface – someone who has both produced or reviewed design and been accountable for what is ultimately built.
- Genuine cross-discipline technical authority: able to lead, review and challenge across mechanical, electrical and public health services rather than a single discipline.
- Proven constructability expertise – a track record of identifying buildability risk, sequencing issues and service interface clashes early, and driving them to resolution.
- Experience leading, mentoring and managing engineering teams.
- Working knowledge of BIM coordination workflows and tools (Revit MEP, Navisworks).
- Confident communicator in English, comfortable holding technical positions with clients and consultants.
- Chartered or professional engineering status (CEng, PE or equivalent).
- Exposure to GCC or wider international project delivery, standards and documentation requirements.
- Experience on data centre, aviation, healthcare, hospitality or large mixed-use projects.
- Familiarity with prefabrication, modular MEP and DfMA delivery approaches.
- Experience of testing, commissioning and handover on complex building services installations.
What's on offer
- Permanent, full-time position based in Chennai.
- Competitive salary and benefits package – to be confirmed, commensurate with experience.
- Genuine technical leadership scope on landmark, technically complex projects.
- Long-term career progression within a growing engineering function.
