The Junior Engineer QA / QC will be responsible for carrying out day-to-day quality inspections and
quality control activities at the New Plant. The role will involve inspection of incoming raw materials,
in-process fabrication, welding, drilling, assembly and finished PEB / structural steel members.
The candidate will work closely with Production, Planning, Engineering, Stores and Dispatch to ensure
that fabricated materials meet approved drawings, specifications and project requirements before being
released for dispatch.
Key Responsibilities
1. Incoming Material Inspection
- Inspect incoming steel plates, sections, coils, hardware, welding consumables and other materials.
- Verify material quantity, size, grade, identification and physical condition.
- Check materials against Purchase Orders, Delivery Challans and approved requirements.
- Review MTCs and other material test certificates as required.
- Report material shortages, damage, incorrect material or other discrepancies to the Manager –
QA/QC.
- Ensure proper material identification and traceability.
2. In-Process Fabrication Inspection
- Carry out inspection at various stages of PEB / structural steel fabrication.
- Inspect cutting, fit-up, welding, drilling, assembly, straightening and finishing activities.
- Verify dimensions, alignment, hole locations, member identification and workmanship.
- Ensure fabrication is carried out as per approved fabrication drawings.
- Identify defects at the earliest stage and coordinate with Production for correction.
3. Welding Inspection
- Inspect welding activities for weld size, appearance, continuity and workmanship.
- Verify welding requirements against approved drawings and applicable specifications.
- Coordinate with the Manager – QA/QC for required NDT such as DPT, MPI, UT or other
applicable testing.
- Record welding inspection results and observations.
- Ensure defective welds are rectified and re-inspected.
4. Dimensional Inspection
- Conduct dimensional checks of fabricated PEB and structural steel members.
- Check member length, width, depth, hole locations, connection plates, alignment and other
required dimensions.
- Use appropriate measuring instruments for inspection.
- Record inspection results accurately.
- Ensure components are within specified tolerances before clearance.
5. Final Inspection & Dispatch Clearance
- Conduct final inspection of fabricated members before dispatch.
- Verify member identification, dimensions, workmanship and overall condition.
- Ensure quality observations are closed before dispatch.
- Coordinate with Dispatch for release of approved materials.
- Ensure rejected or pending items are clearly identified and segregated.
6. Quality Documentation
- Maintain inspection checklists, inspection reports and quality records.
- Maintain records of raw material inspection, welding inspection, dimensional inspection and final
inspection.
- Assist in maintaining MTCs, NDT reports, test certificates and other quality documents.
- Maintain project-wise quality records and traceability documents.
- Ensure inspection records are properly updated and filed.
7. NCR, Rework & Corrective Action
- Identify and report non-conforming materials or fabrication.
- Assist in raising NCRs and maintaining rejection / rework records.
- Coordinate with Production for correction and rework.
- Re-inspect corrected components before acceptance.
- Report recurring quality issues to the Manager – QA/QC.
8. Drawing & Specification Compliance
- Read and understand fabrication and erection drawings relevant to inspection.
- Verify fabrication details against approved drawings.
- Identify drawing-related discrepancies and coordinate with Engineering.
- Ensure only the latest approved drawings are used for inspection and production verification.
9. Inspection Equipment & Calibration
- Use measuring and testing equipment correctly for inspection activities.
- Ensure measuring instruments are in valid calibration.
- Report damaged or expired instruments to the Manager – QA/QC.
- Maintain basic records of inspection equipment used.
10. Coordination with Departments
- Coordinate with Production for in-process and final inspections.
- Coordinate with Stores for incoming material inspection and documentation.
- Coordinate with Planning for inspection priorities based on production and dispatch requirements.
- Coordinate with Engineering for drawing and technical clarifications.
- Coordinate with Dispatch for final quality clearance and material release.
11. Safety & Housekeeping
- Follow all plant safety procedures while carrying out inspections.
- Use required PPE during shop-floor inspections.
- Ensure safe access while inspecting fabricated members and materials.
- Report unsafe conditions observed during inspection activities.
12. Reporting
- Submit daily inspection status and quality updates to the Manager – QA/QC.
- Report major defects, rejection, rework and pending inspections.
- Maintain daily records of completed and pending inspections.
- Highlight quality issues that may affect production or dispatch schedules.
Required Skills
- Minimum 4 years of experience in QA/QC, preferably in PEB / structural steel fabrication.
- Good knowledge of structural steel fabrication processes.
- Ability to read and understand fabrication drawings.
- Good knowledge of welding and dimensional inspection.
- Experience in raw material inspection and MTC verification.
- Basic knowledge of NDT and third-party inspection processes.
- Familiarity with measuring instruments and dimensional tolerances.
- Good documentation and reporting skills.
- Ability to work closely with Production and other plant departments.
- Willingness to work extensively on the shop floor.
