Job summary

PETA India is seeking a dedicated professional to join its emergency response team. The role involves handling urgent animal emergencies, cruelty cases, and rescues across Mumbai, Delhi, and other regions, following PETA’s procedures.

You will coordinate with NGOs, volunteers, and government bodies, document cases, and support public awareness efforts while working on a roster including mornings, evenings, nights, and weekends.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from a recognised institution.
  • Experience handling emergency/cruelty-case responses for animals is a plus.
  • Computer proficiency is required.
  • Fluency in Hindi and English; knowledge of other Indian languages is a plus.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills; multitasking ability.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; professional demeanor.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to emergency and cruelty-case calls and emails promptly.
  • Address issues such as housing restrictions on animal feeders with approved responses.
  • Arrange timely, hands-on help for animals in Mumbai and Delhi with senior support.
  • Coordinate with NGOs, volunteers, government bodies to facilitate rescues nationwide.
  • File police complaints and visit case sites as needed.
  • Inform public on how to help animals with appropriate responses.
  • Maintain a contacts database for emergency response resources.
  • Keep thorough records of all calls and actions taken.
  • Participate in training on animal handling, first aid, and related topics.
  • Represent PETA India professionally to the public and organisations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Job description

To assist PETA India’s emergency response team in handling urgent animal emergencies, rescues, and cruelty cases involving animals.

Term of Employment:

Full-time

Work Schedule:

Work as per a roster-based schedule, which will include morning, evening, night, and weekend shifts, with two rotational weekly offs.

Reports to:

Director-Emergency Response team

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Respond to emergency and general cruelty-case calls and e-mails in a prompt and appropriate manner.
  • Respond to issues related to emergency and general cruelty-case work, such as housing societies that wrongly impose restrictions on animal feeders and caretakers, with form letters and other approved means
  • Arrange timely, hands-on help for animals in need in Mumbai and Delhi with the assistance of the senior paravet and office assistants, in accordance with PETA’s standard operating procedures and in consultation with the relevant supervisor.
  • Coordinate effectively with approved animal-protection organisations, volunteers, activists, government bodies, and designated officials to facilitate emergency rescues in remote areas across the country..
  • File police complaints and First Information Reports, visit relevant agencies and case sites when needed, and perform similar tasks as necessary and assigned.
  • Inform members of the public about ways they can help animals with appropriate responses to cases
  • Maintain and update a database of contacts and services available to PETA India’s emergency and cruelty-case response team as requested by the supervisor
  • In accordance with professional standards, ensure that thorough records are maintained for calls and e-mails received about emergencies and cruelty cases, including how they were handled and concluded
  • Participate in professional development training on animal handling, restraining, first aid, and other lessons relevant to appropriate emergency and cruelty-case response
  • Provide other services related to the emergency and cruelty-case response system, as directed by the supervisor
  • Represent PETA India professionally to the public, organisations, volunteers, veterinarians, government agencies, the police, and others, as directed by the supervisor
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution
  • Voluntary or other experience handling emergency and cruelty-case responses for animals a plus
  • Computer proficiency
  • Fluency in Hindi and English
  • Knowledge of other local Indian languages a plus
  • Exceptional organisational and time-management skills, including multi-tasking
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to deal patiently with animal-protection organisations, volunteers, and other contacts
  • Passion for ending cruelty to animals and helping animals in need
  • Compassionate, responsible, and self-driven character
  • Outgoing and personable manner with excellent communication skills
  • Adherence to a vegan lifestyle
  • Ability and willingness to travel independently as needed to handle emergency and cruelty cases
