PETA India

PETA India works to protect animals from cruelty and neglect across the country. The organisation takes up cases of violence against animals, works with police and local authorities to see the law applied, and supports people who want to help animals in their own neighbourhoods. Its teams handle complaints from the public every day, from injured community animals to conflicts in housing colonies over animal feeding. Much of this work depends on quick, careful coordination between complainants, volunteers and law enforcement. This role sits within PETA India's Cruelty Response Team, which handles cases involving crimes against animals.

Role

The Cruelty Response Assistant supports the Cruelty Response Team in taking in, tracking and resolving cruelty cases reported by the public. You will speak with complainants, bring in the right people to act, and make sure every case is properly recorded from the first call to its resolution. The work is a mix of urgent coordination and steady desk work, and it suits someone who stays calm and organised while dealing with difficult situations. This position is based in Mumbai (preferred) or Delhi, mostly on weekdays with evening and weekend cover on a rota system, and reports to the Lead Cruelty Response Coordinator.

Responsibilities
  • Respond to assigned cruelty case calls and complaints received by email or social media, quickly and effectively
  • Answer common cruelty case complaints using form letters and other means that help complainants
  • Coordinate urgently with police, local animal protection organisations, volunteers, District SPCAs, State Animal Welfare Boards and other stakeholders as each case needs
  • File complaints and follow up on issues involving community animal feeding and conflicts in housing colonies
  • Assist the public in approved ways in matters of cruelty to animals
  • Support the Cruelty Response Team with research and other desk work as assigned
  • Maintain and update the team's database of volunteering and law enforcement contacts and services
  • Keep thorough records of every cruelty complaint received, including how it was handled and how it was resolved
  • Carry out additional tasks assigned by the supervisor
Requirements
  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree from a recognised institution
  • Voluntary or other experience handling cruelty to animal cases
  • Computer proficiency
  • Fluency in Hindi and English
  • Knowledge of other regional languages is an added advantage
  • Exceptional organisational and time management skills, including multitasking
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills
  • Ability to deal patiently with animal protection organisations, volunteers and other stakeholders
  • Passion for preventing cruelty to animals and helping animals in need
  • Compassionate, responsible and self driven character
  • Outgoing and personable manner
  • Adherence to a vegan lifestyle
  • Support for PETA India's philosophy and the ability to advocate for the group's positions professionally
  • Commitment to the objectives of the organisation
  • Full time employment with an established animal protection organisation
  • Direct, hands on work on real cruelty cases where the outcome matters to an animal
  • Regular working alongside police, SPCAs, State Animal Welfare Boards and volunteer networks
  • A mission driven team for anyone who wants their daily work to be about protecting animals
