Job summary

Safran in Hyderabad is seeking an Assistant Manager – SMS to support the organisation's Safety Management System within an Engine MRO environment.

You will act as a dedicated focal point for day-to-day SMS activities, including hazard identification, safety risk assessment, occurrence analysis, safety performance monitoring and SMS training.

The role requires strong aviation safety knowledge and the ability to train and coordinate across departments to maintain compliance and safe operations.

Qualifications

• 8 years of aviation experience, preferably in a Part-145, MRO, airline engineering, or aviation technical environment.
• At least 2-3 years of relevant exposure to Safety, Quality, Compliance Monitoring, or operational risk management.
• Practical experience in a Part-145 maintenance organisation is strongly preferred.
• Understanding of maintenance processes, documentation, tooling, inspections and release processes.
• Experience working with technicians, certifying staff, engineers and production personnel.

Responsibilities

• Act as SMS focal point for day-to-day activities including hazard identification and safety risk assessment.
• Administer the internal safety reporting system and maintain the hazard register.
• Coordinate risk mitigation actions and monitor effectiveness of controls.
• Support the investigation of safety occurrences and perform root cause analyses.

Reports to: Deputy Safety Manager/ Functionally reports to CMM/ Safety Manager.

Purpose

The SMS & Safety Training Officer will support the Safety Manager in the implementation, administration, maintenance and continual improvement of the organisation's Safety Management System.

The position holder will act as a dedicated focal point for day-to-day SMS activities, including hazard identification, safety risk assessment, occurrence analysis, safety performance monitoring, safety promotion and SMS training.

The role is particularly important in an Engine MRO environment, where safety risks may arise from maintenance activities, human performance, tooling and equipment, engine handling, preservation, shift handovers, contractor interfaces, production pressures and changes to processes or facilities.

The position should support, but not replace, the responsibility of operational managers for managing safety within their own areas.

Key Responsibilities

A. Safety Reporting and Hazard Identification

The SMS Officer shall:

Administer the organisation's internal safety reporting system.

Receive, register, classify and track safety reports, hazards, occurrences and near misses.

Review reports for completeness and coordinate with relevant departments for additional information.

Encourage personnel to report hazards and unsafe conditions.

Support the principles of Just Culture and positive reporting culture.

Maintain a central hazard register.

Identify recurring hazards and systemic safety concerns.

Ensure significant safety issues are promptly escalated to the Safety Manager and relevant management.

B. Safety Risk Management

Facilitate hazard identification and risk assessment activities.

Support departments in conducting formal safety risk assessments.

Apply the organisation's approved risk assessment methodology.

Evaluate hazards in terms of severity, likelihood and overall risk.

Develop and coordinate appropriate mitigation measures with responsible managers.

Maintain and update the Safety Risk Register.

Monitor the implementation of risk mitigation actions.

Conduct effectiveness reviews to determine whether implemented controls are achieving the intended result.

Escalate overdue or ineffective mitigation actions.

Particular attention should be given to MRO-related risks such as maintenance error, human factors, foreign object damage, incorrect tooling, configuration control, engine transportation and handling, contractor activities and production pressure.

C. Occurrence Investigation and Safety Analysis

Support the investigation of safety occurrences and significant hazards.

Collect factual information, records and supporting evidence.

Facilitate root cause and contributing factor analysis.

The SMS Officer should also act as an internal SMS Trainer, subject to demonstrating appropriate training competence.

Responsibilities shall include:

Conducting SMS training needs analysis.

Developing and maintaining an SMS training matrix.

Developing training presentations, case studies and practical exercises.

Conducting initial SMS training for new employees.

Conducting recurrent SMS training.

Providing role‑specific training for managers, supervisors and personnel involved in safety‑related activities.

Conducting specialised training in hazard identification and risk assessment.

Providing training on occurrence reporting and Just Culture principles.

Coordinating training records and competency assessments.

Reviewing training effectiveness.

Updating training material based on changes to the organisation, regulations and lessons learned.

Minimum requirement
