Job summary

Flogas Ireland seeks a Senior Data Engineer to own the data modelling and transformation layer, turning raw data into trusted datasets for analytics. You will define reusable logic and mentor the team, focusing on modelling, semantic design, and data quality over ingestion.

You will shape the semantic layer for Power BI, enforce standards, and work across the Medallion Architecture to deliver clean, documented data assets. Collaboration with BI and data teams is essential.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a Senior Data/Analytics Engineer with strong modelling focus.
• Deep understanding of dimensional modelling and semantic design.
• Experience with Medallion/lakehouse architectures.
• Strong SQL skills and hands-on dbt experience.
• Experience with cloud data platforms like Microsoft Fabric/Azure Synapse/Snowflake/Databricks.

About the role

Flogas Ireland is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to own the data modelling and transformation layer that turns raw operational data into trusted, analysis-ready datasets. Sitting between data engineering and business intelligence, this role will set modelling standards for our Microsoft Fabric platform, define reusable business logic, and mentor the wider engineering team. The focus is on modelling, semantic design, transformation logic, and data quality, rather than pipeline ingestion.

Key Responsibilities

• Own the semantic layer underpinning Power BI reporting, including clear definitions for key metrics, dimensions, and certified datasets.
• Set and enforce data quality, testing, and documentation standards so issues are identified before they reach reporting or business users.
• Design, build, and maintain complex models across the Medallion Architecture, transforming source data into clean, tested, and well-documented datasets.
• Mentor Engineers, reviewing their modelling work and embedding good practice across the team.
• Work with Data Engineers on source readiness and BI Developers on report requirements, ensuring reporting is built on trusted, certified datasets.
• Maintain model, transformation, and business logic documentation in the data catalogue to reduce key-person dependency and support self-service analytics.
• Champion version control, peer review, and CI/CD practices for analytics code as the platform matures.

Essential

• Proven experience as a Senior Data Engineer, Analytics Engineer, or Data Engineer with a strong data modelling focus
• Deep understanding of dimensional modelling, semantic layer design, and Medallion/lakehouse architecture patterns
• Experience of data modelling using Kimball methodology
• Strong SQL skills and extensive hands‑on experience with dbt or an equivalent transformation framework
• Experience with a modern cloud data platform (e.g. Microsoft Fabric, Azure Synapse, Snowflake, or Databricks)
• Experience mentoring engineers and setting technical standards for a modelling layer
• Strong communication skills, able to work confidently with both technical and business stakeholders

Desirable

• Experience in an energy, utilities, or regulated industry
• Exposure to data governance and cataloguing tools (e.g. Microsoft Purview)
• Experience establishing data testing and CI/CD practices for analytics code
• Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric semantic model tooling (e.g. Semantic Link Labs Library)
• Azure DevOps (or similar) familiarity or experience
