Role Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced EHS & Facilities Manager to join their team. This is a broad and influential leadership position with responsibility for the effectiveness, continuous improvement and assurance of the Health & Safety Management System, certified to ISO 45001, as well as the Environmental and Energy Management Systems, certified to ISO 14001 and ISO 50001.
The successful candidate will also provide leadership to the site Facilities team.
A key focus of the role will be to further strengthen the organisation's safety culture by embedding health and safety into everyday operational management. The EHS & Facilities Manager will provide the framework, expertise, coaching and challenge required to enable line managers to take ownership of safe working practices and safety outcomes within their areas.
This is therefore both a technical leadership role and a change leadership position, supporting the transition towards safety being owned by operational teams and enabled by the EHS function.
The successful candidate will ensure strong regulatory compliance, effective risk management, meaningful employee engagement and participation, and continuous improvement across EHS, facilities, energy and environmental performance.
Key Responsibilities
Health & Safety Leadership, Governance & Management Systems
- Own, maintain and continually improve the company's Health & Safety Management System in line with ISO 45001.
- Act as the site subject matter expert on health and safety legislation, ISO 45001 requirements, risk management and safety leadership.
- Ensure the Safety Statement, risk assessments, operating procedures, emergency arrangements and legal compliance registers remain current and effective.
- Develop the site safety strategy, annual EHS plan and improvement roadmap in line with business and manufacturing priorities.
- Establish clear safety roles, responsibilities and expectations across senior leadership, management, supervisors and employees.
- Coach and support line managers in managing risk assessments, safe systems of work, safety conversations and corrective actions.
- Integrate safety into daily and weekly management activities, including meetings, Gemba walks, audits, management of change reviews and project reviews.
- Work closely with Operations, Engineering, Quality and Continuous Improvement teams to ensure new processes, equipment, automation, materials and operational changes are appropriately assessed and controlled.
- Develop and monitor leading safety indicators, including safety observations, hazard and near-miss reporting, corrective action closure, audits, training compliance and leadership activity.
- Monitor lagging indicators such as accidents, injuries, first aid cases, incident trends and regulatory events, using the findings to drive preventative action.
- Promote effective employee consultation and participation in health and safety initiatives.
- Coordinate emergency preparedness activities, including emergency response teams, drills, procedures and equipment.
- Benchmark best practice and identify opportunities to continuously improve site safety standards.
Incident Management, Learning & Assurance
- Ensure all incidents, near misses and hazards are reported, investigated and closed out effectively and within appropriate timescales.
- Ensure line managers take ownership of incident investigations and corrective actions, with EHS providing expertise, methodology and independent challenge.
Verify the effectiveness of corrective actions and ensure lessons learned are communicated across relevant teams and processes.
Develop and maintain an effective audit and inspection programme covering both compliance and operational controls.
Escalate significant risks, recurring non-conformances and ineffective controls through the appropriate management channels.
Prepare clear and accurate EHS performance reports for site leadership, Group leadership, regulatory authorities and customers as required.
Environmental & Energy Management
- Maintain and continually improve the Environmental and Energy Management Systems in accordance with ISO 14001 and ISO 50001.
- Monitor and report on environmental and energy performance, including carbon footprint, water consumption, waste, recycling and energy usage.
- Develop policies, procedures and improvement initiatives covering waste management, recycling, emissions reduction, resource efficiency and energy performance.
- Conduct environmental and energy audits and inspections to identify risks, compliance gaps and improvement opportunities.
- Support the company's sustainability objectives through practical energy-saving, waste-reduction and environmental initiatives.
- Liaise with regulators, customers, suppliers and service providers on environmental, energy and compliance matters.
Facilities Management
- Take responsibility for the management, maintenance and compliance of site facilities supporting employee safety, welfare and business continuity.
- Ensure welfare facilities, including canteen areas, sanitary facilities, changing rooms, first aid facilities and welfare spaces, are maintained to the required legal and company standards.
- Maintain the safety and compliance of the site infrastructure, including roofs, floors, fire doors, walkways, stairs, pedestrian routes, lighting, drainage and structural elements.
- Manage external areas including roads, car parks, pedestrian routes, traffic management systems, fencing, signage, landscaping and drainage.
- Ensure facilities and external areas remain safe, compliant and fit for purpose.
Team & Change Leadership
- Lead, develop and motivate the site EHS and Facilities team.
- Establish clear priorities, objectives and development plans for the team.
- Build a culture of accountability, ownership, learning and continuous improvement.
- Coach managers and supervisors to develop their confidence and capability in safety leadership, risk management, incident investigation and employee engagement.
- Influence stakeholders at all levels and constructively challenge where safety standards, behaviours or controls do not meet expectations.
- Work collaboratively with Production, Engineering, Quality, HR and Continuous Improvement teams to optimise plant performance while protecting people, the environment and the business.
Qualifications & Experience
- A recognised qualification in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Management, Facilities Management, Engineering or a related discipline.
- Proven experience managing ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and/or ISO 50001 management systems within a manufacturing, industrial or similarly regulated environment.
- Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation, environmental compliance, building regulations, contractor management and operational risk control.
- Experience supporting or leading safety culture and organisational change initiatives.
- Strong practical experience in risk assessment, incident investigation, root cause analysis, auditing, corrective action management and management of change.
- Previous experience leading and developing teams within a fast-paced operational environment.
- Excellent coaching, influencing and communication skills, with the ability to challenge constructively while maintaining strong working relationships.
- Strong analytical, reporting and presentation skills, with the ability to turn EHS data into meaningful business insight.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with EHS, facilities, maintenance or action-tracking systems would be advantageous.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while balancing compliance requirements with operational practicality.
