Health & Safety Manager
Location: Castlebar, Co. Mayo
About the Role
An established and growing engineering and construction contractor is seeking an experienced Health & Safety Manager to lead, develop, and continuously improve health, safety, environmental, and quality standards across multiple projects. The successful candidate will play a key role in promoting a strong safety culture while ensuring full compliance with Irish health and safety legislation and industry best practices.
This is an excellent opportunity for a proactive H&S professional who can work closely with senior management, site teams, subcontractors, and clients to drive positive safety performance across a diverse portfolio of commercial, healthcare, industrial, residential, and infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain the company's Health & Safety Management System.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant Irish health & safety legislation, regulations, and industry standards.
- Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and safety assessments across active projects.
- Prepare and review RAMS (Risk Assessments and Method Statements).
- Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
- Monitor and report on key safety performance indicators.
- Deliver safety inductions, toolbox talks, and ongoing training programmes.
- Support project teams during planning and execution stages to ensure safe systems of work are in place.
- Liaise with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and regulatory bodies on all H&S matters.
- Maintain accurate health and safety documentation and records.
- Lead emergency preparedness and response planning.
- Promote a positive safety culture throughout the organisation.
- Assist with environmental compliance initiatives and continuous improvement programmes.
- Stay up to date with changes in legislation and industry best practice.
Requirements
- Degree, Diploma, or Professional Qualification in Occupational Health & Safety.
- Minimum 5 years' experience in a Health & Safety role within construction, engineering, mechanical, electrical, or related sectors.
- Strong knowledge of Irish Health & Safety legislation and construction regulations.
- Experience conducting site audits and inspections.
- Proven ability to develop and implement effective safety management systems.
- Excellent incident investigation and reporting skills.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and safety management software.
- Full clean driving licence.
- Ability to travel to project sites as required.
Desirable
- Chartered Membership of IOSH (CMIOSH) or working towards same.
- Experience within Mechanical & Electrical contracting environments.
- Internal Auditor qualification.
- Environmental management experience.
- Knowledge of ISO 45001, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001 management systems. The organisation operates to recognised quality, environmental and occupational health & safety standards.
