GPTX Investment Management Limited is a licensed corporation providing investment solutions and client service. The investment team is small, and analysts work close to the decisions, the portfolio managers and the clients whose capital is at stake.
The Role
This is a junior analyst position, open to candidates with zero to three years of experience, including fresh graduates; prior industry experience is not required. The role covers companies and sectors, maintains the team's models and data, and converts findings into notes that support a decision. Part of the work is routine: reading filings, rebuilding a model that no longer reconciles, verifying a figure on which a recommendation depends. The remainder involves forming a view and defending it before colleagues who will test it.
Selection places greater weight on attitude than on credentials. Modelling conventions, the coverage process and the systems are taught; care over whether a number is correct is not.
Attitude Is the First Criterion
Attitude is assessed first, ahead of academic results, institution and length of CV. A candidate who is eager to learn and takes ownership of their work will be preferred to one with stronger credentials who waits to be directed.
- Willingness to learn. Questions are asked early, correction is accepted without defensiveness, and the response to feedback is a revised piece of work rather than an explanation.
- Work ethic. Deliverables required before the market opens are completed before it opens. Initiative is expected, and outstanding items are not left for colleagues to identify.
- Ownership. Models and workstreams are maintained to standard. Where a model fails, it is corrected and the team is informed before the output is relied upon.
- Multi-tasking. Earnings season may bring four companies, two data requests and a client note within the same week. Priorities are managed, progress is communicated, and routine tasks are not neglected.
- Reliability. Commitments are met as made, and any change to a commitment is communicated in advance.
Tools and Automation
- New tools are learned quickly, whether a data vendor, a spreadsheet add-in, an AI assistant or an internal script, and any automation is documented so that colleagues can use and maintain it.
- Confidentiality governs the choice of tool. Client data, unpublished research and personal data remain within approved systems, and judgement about what may be entered into a public AI tool forms part of the requirement.
Teamwork and Communication
- Regular contact with portfolio managers, the trading desk, operations and compliance, and with brokers and data providers outside the firm.
- Written output includes investment notes, minutes and data summaries; a stated conclusion and an identifiable source are preferred to length.
- Work is presented to colleagues who may disagree. The ability to state a view, and the evidence that would change it, is valued more highly than being consistently right.
- Difficulties are raised early. A first-year analyst is not expected to know everything; requesting assistance is not a failing.
Key Responsibilities
- Cover assigned companies and sectors: review filings, results and announcements, and track the numbers.
- Build and maintain financial models, including forecasts and valuation, with assumptions documented.
- Run screens and data analysis to generate ideas, and maintain the team's data sets to a standard the team can rely on.
- Draft investment memoranda, earnings notes and material for internal meetings and client requests.
- Monitor existing holdings and identify changes in fundamentals or news of significance.
- Support due diligence on new ideas and funds, including data collection and organisation.
- Undertake ad hoc research and projects as required by the team.
Requirements
- Fresh graduates are encouraged to apply. A degree in finance, economics, accounting or a quantitative discipline; other backgrounds are considered where numerical ability is evident.
- Working proficiency in Excel, and the willingness to develop it further.
- The ability to read a set of financial statements and form sensible questions from them.
- Strong written and verbal English.
- The right to work in Hong Kong.
- Python, R, SQL, Power Query or VBA, or any other means of removing manual steps.
- Experience with Bloomberg, FactSet, Wind or a comparable data service.
- Progress toward the CFA charter or an accounting qualification.
- Internships, coursework or personal projects involving company or sector analysis.
- Cantonese and/or Mandarin.
What We Offer
- A junior seat with genuine scope: analysis contributes to investment decisions rather than remaining on file. Training assumes no prior industry experience.
- A small team in which senior colleagues are accessible and individual contribution is visible.
- A competitive salary and benefits package.
- Professional development and a defined path for progression within the team.
