GPTX Investment Management Limited is a licensed corporation providing investment solutions and client service. The trading desk sits beside the investment team, so a junior trader follows each instruction from idea and order through to execution, confirmation and settlement.
The Role
This is a junior trading position, open to candidates with zero to three years of experience, including fresh graduates; prior trading experience is not required. The role covers execution of equity, fund and listed derivative orders across Asian markets, intraday monitoring of positions, cash and limits, and confirmation that what was agreed has been booked. Speed matters on the desk; accuracy takes precedence, since an incorrect quantity executed quickly costs more than a delayed execution.
Selection places greater weight on attitude than on experience. The products, the systems and the execution conventions are taught. Composure when a counterparty is unresponsive and markets are moving is not.
Attitude Is the First Criterion
Attitude is assessed first, ahead of academic results, institution and length of CV. On a small desk, temperament and application to the work are not secondary qualities; they are the substance of the role.
- Willingness to learn. Markets and answers change daily. Questions are asked about price movements, notices are read rather than skimmed, and correction is accepted without defensiveness.
- Discipline. The desk operates within limits, mandates and procedures. These are observed, concerns about a rule are raised through the appropriate channel rather than worked around, and instructions are executed only within delegated authority.
- Composure. Adverse prints, opening gaps and simultaneous calls are routine. The response is measured, matters are escalated promptly and judgement is exercised under pressure.
- Work ethic. The day begins before the market opens and does not always end at the close. Preparation is completed the previous evening, and tasks are not left awaiting instruction.
- Multi-tasking. Orders across several markets, corporate actions, cash queries and calls from portfolio managers may run concurrently. They are managed in sequence, with nothing dropped.
- Reliability. Commitments are met as made, records are completed at the time of the trade, and exceptions are reported before others discover them.
Tools and Automation
A trading desk generates repetitive work: pre-trade checks, post-trade logs, daily reconciliations. Candidates are expected to reduce it with the appropriate tool, whether a formula, a macro, a script or appropriately governed use of AI for routine drafting. Time released is applied to monitoring the market.
- New systems are learned quickly, whether order management, market data or a broker portal, and any automation is documented and demonstrated to the desk.
- Confidentiality governs the choice of tool. Order details, client information and unpublished positions remain within approved systems, and judgement about what may be entered into a public AI tool forms part of the requirement.
Teamwork and Communication
- Regular contact with portfolio managers, brokers, operations, compliance and custodians, in Hong Kong and across the region.
- Communication is brief and precise: the number first, the qualification second, as in “filled at an average of 42.15” or “not filled, no offer at the limit”.
- Records are written as events occur, since the record protects both the firm and the individual. Matters outside delegated authority are referred before action is taken, and changes are communicated to the desk.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute equity, fund and listed derivative orders as instructed across Asian markets, and confirm executions to portfolio managers.
- Perform pre-trade checks on limits, restrictions, cash and mandate, record each instruction, and monitor positions, exposures, cash and margin through the day.
- Maintain the order and trade log, reconcile executions against broker confirmations, resolve breaks with operations, and track corporate actions, expiries, roll dates and settlement deadlines affecting the book.
- Build and maintain desk tools for pricing checks, exposure and reporting, including best-execution and transaction cost analysis.
- Obtain quotes, broker commentary and market information, and relay what is material to portfolio managers.
- Undertake ad hoc projects and tasks as required by the desk.
Requirements
- Fresh graduates are encouraged to apply. A degree in finance, economics, mathematics, engineering or similar; the quality of reasoning demonstrated matters more than the title of the degree.
- Numerical fluency and speed with spreadsheets, and comfort with the figures underlying a trade.
- Clear, concise and precise English, written and spoken.
- Willingness to work market hours, including an early start and occasional public holidays.
- The right to work in Hong Kong.
- Exposure to an order or execution management system, Bloomberg, or a trading simulation.
- Some programming, for example Python or VBA, applied to checks or reporting.
- Familiarity with listed derivatives and how they are priced and settled.
- Trading simulations, investment competitions or personal market experience.
- Cantonese and/or Mandarin.

- A small team in which senior colleagues are accessible and individual contribution is visible.
- A competitive salary and benefits package.
- Professional development and a defined path for progression within the team.
