Job Description:

Sustainability Consultant or Senior Consultant

Birmingham, Cambridge or Oxford

About us

Hoare Lea is a human-centric and planet-conscious engineering consultancy. We offer intelligent and sustainable solutions to complex design challenges for the built environment throughout the UK and further afield.

We provide a wide range of engineering and consultancy services, including acoustics, air quality, building services (MEP), fire, lighting, security and sustainability to name but a few. Together, our highly skilled teams use technical expertise and problem-solving skills to bring buildings to life. We ensure that whatever the building, its design is outstanding, and its operations meet the needs of the communities it serves.

We are as committed to providing an environment where everyone can realise their unique potential. So, in joining Hoare Lea, you will experience a business that enriches your knowledge, supports your wellbeing, and welcomes your individuality. You’ll have the opportunity to participate in our 9-day fortnight scheme, thriving community groups, varied social and networking events, and extensive professional and technical development schemes. We also offer an extensive benefits package, including private medical cover, electric vehicle salary sacrifice scheme, stock options, and up to 30 days of annual leave.

Whatever your ambitions or circumstances, our aim is to enable everyone to develop their knowledge, give their best, and enjoy what they do.

About the role

We have a brand-new opportunity for a Sustainability Consultant or Senior Consultant to join one of our teams located in Birmingham, Cambridge or Oxford.

It's an exciting time to be part of our broader Sustainability group which has a presence in every Hoare Lea office across the country.

We provide a diverse sustainability consultancy service promoting sustainable development for a range of projects, across all sectors.

Our Sustainability Group is an industry leader in its approach to sustainable design, construction and building operation. Focused on achieving ever greater standards of environmental sustainability, the discipline thrives on its dynamic, innovative, and ambitious working culture.

This is a rare opportunity to grow not only your own career, but the industry approach to your field of expertise as a whole.

In this key and varied role, you can expect to:

  • Develop holistic sustainability strategies
  • Lead the delivery of environmental and wellbeing assessments (such as BREEAM, WELL, HQM, etc) from early design stages through to project completion/post construction.
  • Undertake a range of modelling and assessments, which may include but not limited to: embodied carbon calculations and circular economy consultancy, building performance simulation including operational energy estimates, and overheating.
  • Support the development of energy and sustainability strategies with our clients to lead sustainability innovation on new and existing developments.
  • Support the training of junior members of the team e.g. in workstream delivery, consultancy and project planning.
  • Work within the Technical Excellence programme on research and development initiatives to allow us to stay at the cutting edge of knowledge in our industry. As well as project-related work, you would have the opportunity to engage directly with the industry, undertaking research and development studies, and authoring industry guidance.

About you

You are likely to have some knowledge and competence in a selection of the following fields:

1. Energy performance modelling – using IES VE

2. Whole life carbon assessments (including embodied and operational carbon assessments) – using OneClick or other methodologies

4. Circular Economy Statements

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • Experience working within the built environment sector.
  • Already working within a sustainability or engineering consultancy, you will be looking for a new challenge within a practice at the very forefront of our field.
  • You will bring expertise (with a degree in engineering/science, and experience in the field) and a passion for creating sustainable solutions.
  • You will relish being part of dynamic team within a progressive and well-respected firm.
  • You will have good communication skills and an enthusiasm for working within a team environment.
  • Like us, you will be serious about sustainability.
