Job description

Helping others improve and turn their lives around – there’s no better feeling. It’s what we do for thousands of people at more than 150 sites across the UK. Be a part of it.

  • Job Title: Consultant Psychiatrist
  • Service Line: Male PICU

  • Professionally Accountable to: Medical Director
  • Managerially Responsible to: Hospital Manager

We are seeking an experienced full‑time Consultant Psychiatrist who will work at Cygnet Joyce Parker Hospital and provide senior medical cover on Blythe Ward, our 12 bed Male PICU service due to open in January 2026.

This is part of an expansion of the service. There is already an existing fully functioning PICU (Beck ward) on site which is currently covered by another Consultant Psychiatrist who is also the Medical Director. All PICU consultants are part of the Cygnet PICU peer group who meet weekly for peer support and discussion of complex cases.

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician and will oversee and maintain the care of all ward inpatients as required and will also have responsibility for auditing the medical services rendered at the ward and ensuring their good quality in accordance to GMC standards of good medical practice and other relevant professional guidelines.

Blythe Ward is a 12 bed male PICU which accepts emergency and crisis admissions. Referrals come to us from all areas, including directly from community, from acute, other PICUs and prison services.

Our aim is a short, rapid intervention to help individuals regain a sense of control and order in their lives, so they can move to a less restrictive care setting and ultimately return home.

The service provides expert, intensive, short‑term, individualised care for men detained under the Mental Health Act. Service users will present with increased risks that require them to be assessed and treated in a PICU environment.

In this role, your expertise will be the driving force for life‑changing treatment fully supported by a Specialty Doctor and first‑class multidisciplinary team including qualified nurses, psychologist and occupational therapist.

And if interested you’ll have the opportunity to progress to Medical Director Level through our management schemes once an opportunity arises.

At Cygnet, you’ll enjoy excellent professional development, shopping, travel and leisure discounts – as well as a range of healthcare and financial benefits – to support you to be happy both in and out of work.

Apply now to enjoy excellent career prospects while reaping the rewards of making a difference to others – every day.
